Trabzon Airport
Trabzon Airport (IATA: TZX, ICAO: LTCG) is the main airport of Trabzon and the eastern Black Sea region, located 7 km east of the city. It handles a busy domestic network, mainly to İstanbul and Ankara, plus international and charter flights.
The airport has a single runway, 11/29 (2,640 m × 45 m, asphalt), built on a narrow strip of coastline: the Black Sea is directly north of the runway and the Pontic Mountains rise steeply just south of it. Aerodrome elevation is 105 ft and the transition altitude is 12,000 ft.
The apron lies south of the runway and serves both the Domestic and International Terminals. The terrain to the south shapes every procedure at Trabzon: circling south of the aerodrome is not authorised, departures have high climb gradients, and most procedures route over the sea.
Note: According to the AIP, Trabzon Airport is closed to air traffic every Wednesday 1000–1300 UTC for routine maintenance of the movement areas. During these hours the airport is opened by a cancellation NOTAM only for planned emergency, military and VIP flights and flights deemed necessary by the Airport Authority.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)
The term "Preferential Runway System (PRS)" indicates the runway that, at a particular time, is considered by the ATC unit to be the most suitable for use by aircraft expected to land at or take off from the aerodrome, taking into consideration aircraft performance, surface wind speed and its components. PRS operations contribute to the optimum use of airspace and aerodrome capacity.
The preferential runway for LTCG is RWY 11.
| RWYCC (Runway Condition Code) | Tail Wind Component (max) |
|---|---|
| RWYCC 6/6/6 (dry) | 10 KT (included) |
| RWYCC reported at least 5 on any third of the runway | 5 KT (included) |
- In PRS operations, the wind criteria above are applied depending on the runway surface condition.
- During PRS operations, ATC also takes into account ground wind, traffic situation, local meteorological conditions, environmental restrictions, technical infrastructure, noise abatement, etc.
- PRS operations are not available when:
- the instrument approach/departure procedures for the preferred runway are not suitable for the existing weather,
- the preferred runway is dry (RWYCC 6/6/6) and the tailwind component is greater than 10 KT,
- RWYCC is reported at least 5 on any third of the preferred runway and the tailwind component is greater than 5 KT,
- RWYCC is reported at least 5 on any third and a NOTAM/equivalent information (may be in the RCR) states the runway is slippery,
- RWYCC is reported 4 or less on any third of the preferred runway,
- heavy rain, thunderstorm or wind shear is reported on the approach or climb path of the preferred runway,
- low visibility operations are in progress.
- When PRS is in use the ATIS will announce: "Preferential Runway Operations are in Progress".
- Pilots unable to comply with PRS must notify ATC when requesting start-up clearance, on first contact, or 20 minutes before ETA, whichever is earlier.
RWY 11 is also the only runway with a precision approach (ILS). RWY 29 has a localizer-only approach, so expect RWY 11 whenever the wind allows.
If you consider the runway in use unsafe for your aircraft for safety or performance reasons, you may request another runway. ATC will accommodate the request at an appropriate time, but you may face a long delay; ATC will tell you if the delay is expected to exceed 30 minutes.
Arrival Procedures
Trabzon Airport is located inside the Trabzon TMA, with the Rize–Artvin TMA adjacent to the east. The Trabzon CTR is small: a 5 NM radius from SFC to 1,000 ft AMSL. Approach service is provided by Trabzon Approach, or by Trabzon Tower when required or when transferred by Approach. Surveillance radar (SRA) and precision radar (PAR) approaches are not available; Approach vectors arrivals to the instrument approach courses (or to the circuit for a visual approach) with a minimum radar separation of 5 NM in the TMA.
Both RNAV (GNSS) and conventional STARs are published. The RNAV STARs require P-RNAV approval and radar. On first contact, report if you are unable to comply with the RNAV procedure; otherwise expect the RNAV STAR.
- Unless otherwise instructed by ATC, the maximum speed within the TMA is 250 KT IAS.
- Speeds published on the RNAV STARs are maximum speeds: 210 KT at the IF and 180 KT at the FAF.
- The vertical clearance on the RNAV STARs is "descend as cleared": plan your descent to meet the published altitude restrictions.
- Aircraft vacating the runway via a rapid exit taxiway have priority over other taxiing aircraft at intersections.
- After vacating the runway, contact Trabzon Ground 121.900 unless told otherwise.
- All IFR/VFR civil, charter and military traffic planning to use the aerodrome must contact the Trabzon Aerodrome Authority or ATC. Charter flights planning to land at Trabzon must obtain permission from the Aerodrome Office on duty 3 hours in advance. Aircraft without two-way radio need prior permission.
Terrain and Local Considerations
- High terrain south of the airport. The 25 NM MSA around TBN is 11,500 ft in the whole southern half, against 7,500 ft (north-west) and 5,000 ft (north-east) over the sea. The RNAV charts use an OTPEX-based MSA: 6,500 ft on the sea side and 11,500 ft on the land side. Never descend early when routing over land.
- Minimum radar vectoring altitudes (MRVC, based on Trabzon Radar): 4,300 ft over the sea and coastline, rising inland to 8,600 ft and 10,200 ft, and 11,500–12,200 ft in the southern part of the TMA.
- Circling approaches are not authorised south of the aerodrome. This caution is printed on every Trabzon approach chart. All circling is done on the sea (north) side.
- Steep PAPIs: RWY 11 PAPI is set to 3.3° (MEHT 51 ft) and RWY 29 PAPI to 3.5° (MEHT 49 ft), both on the left side; the RWY 11 ILS glide path is also 3.3°. Expect a steeper-than-normal final.
- Obstacles close to the runway (AD 2.23):
- a highway runs parallel to the runway 125 m south of the centreline; vehicles and the 8 m lighting masts along it are obstacles;
- natural obstacles and buildings 150–315 m south of the centreline exceed the Annex 14 transitional surface;
- obstacles 233 m high at approx. 1,800 m, 242 m and 1,950 m from the runway centreline (as published);
- the top 7 m of a building 960 m from the RWY 29 threshold penetrates the approach and take-off surfaces;
- a 10 m (45 ft AMSL) pedestrian overpass south of the RWY 29 threshold, 145 m from the runway centreline;
- a 2 m high, 1,000 m long soil stack between TWY E and the RWY 29 strip, 53 m from the runway centreline;
- further construction within 6 km south of the airport, parallel to the runway.
- The Aerodrome Obstacle Chart (AOC Type A) shows terrain rising above the take-off flight path area beyond the RWY 29 end, i.e. under the RWY 11 climb-out.
- Birds: bird movements and concentrations up to 300 ft AGL around the airport — sea gulls in summer and autumn, crows and geese in winter and spring. They fly in from the sea (north to south), settle on the runway and strip, then fly away to the west/north. The BRD chart shows three concentration areas along the shoreline north of the runway. Pilots are advised to be cautious.
Runways and ILS
| Runway | Approach aid | Frequency | Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | ILS/DME ITBZ | 109.10 MHz (GP 331.4 MHz, 3.3°, RDH 55 ft; DME CH28X) | CAT I | Preferential runway. ILS/DME unusable beyond 10° right of the localizer centreline. |
| 29 | LLZ/DME ITRB (no glide path) | 108.90 MHz (DME CH26X) | LOC only | LLZ/DME unusable beyond 18 NM from the antenna and outside 10° left of the centreline. |
The RWY 11 approach lighting is a precision CAT II barrette system (540 m), but the ILS itself (ITBZ) is published as CAT I and only CAT I minima are charted. RWY 11 also has 900 m of touchdown-zone lighting. RWY 29 has a simple 330 m barrette approach light system. Both runways have centreline, edge, threshold, end and stopway lights and RTIL.
TBN VOR/DME 114.9 (CH96X) / NDB 371 is co-located on the shoreline north of the runway. It is unusable between R100 and R265 within 7–12 NM below 9,000 ft and beyond 12 NM below 18,000 ft, and between R150 and R240 beyond 24 NM below 26,000 ft (the NDB has the same restrictions).
Declared distances (AD 2.13). Each runway has a 60 m × 45 m stopway, which is why ASDA is 60 m longer than TORA.
| RWY | TORA | TODA | ASDA | LDA | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | 2,640 m | 2,640 m | 2,700 m | 2,640 m | THR elevation 105 ft |
| 29 | 2,640 m | 2,640 m | 2,700 m | 2,640 m | THR elevation 96 ft |
Intersection take-off distances are listed under Taxi Procedures.

ATC will clear you for the LOC ONLY approach RWY 29 (IAC-7) at or before EVDAX. There is no glide path on RWY 29. Brief a non-precision approach and use the 3.5° PAPI.
Circling Approaches
All four TBN-based procedures — VOR A / NDB A, VOR B / NDB B, VOR C / NDB C and VOR D — are circling-only: straight-in minima are "not authorised". All carry the caution "Circling approach is not authorised south of the aerodrome" (terrain). The circling OCA is 1,550 ft (1,445 ft) for all categories. VOR B, VOR C and VOR D require DME. VOR D starts at OTPEX (D21 TBN, 6,500 ft) with the FAF at EKPIT (D9 TBN, 3,000 ft).
Missed approach:
- VOR A and VOR B: turn left climbing on 029° to 3,500 ft, then turn left climbing to 6,000 ft to TBN and hold.
- VOR D: turn left to intercept R-029 from TBN, climb to 3,500 ft, then turn left climbing to 6,000 ft to TBN and hold.
- VOR C: turn right climbing on 299° to 3,500 ft, then turn right climbing to 6,000 ft to TBN and hold.
Radio Failure
The LTCG AIP does not publish a local radio failure procedure. Follow the standard ICAO procedures, squawk 7600, and fly the cleared STAR and the published approach.
Ground Operations
Ground Layout
Trabzon has a single runway, 11/29, with the apron to the south. TWY C is the apron taxiway running in front of the stands. It connects to the runway via:
- TWY A: west end, running parallel to the runway to the RWY 11 threshold;
- TWY B and TWY D: intermediate connectors to the runway;
- TWY E: east end of the apron, joining the runway in its eastern half (1,545 m TORA remain for a RWY 29 departure from E).
There is no parallel taxiway to the RWY 29 threshold, which has a turn pad. Intermediate holding positions C-HP1 to C-HP4 are marked on TWY C. Runway guard lights are installed at TWYs A, B, D and E. There are no stop bars.
Local rules (AIP AD 2.20):
- When an aircraft is at the TWY B holding point, other aircraft must not pass behind it on TWY C (behind stands 11, 12 and 13).
- When an aircraft is at the TWY D holding point, other aircraft must not pass behind it on TWY C.
- To avoid damaging the renewed asphalt, no "back return" is allowed on the runway.
Apron and Stands
The single concrete apron (elevation 30 m) serves both terminals: the Domestic Terminal at the western end and the International Terminal (departures and arrivals) in the middle. Push-back service is provided for all stands.
| Stands | Max aircraft (per PRKG) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| 14 | A300-600 | Western end, next to the Domestic Terminal |
| 3–13 | A321-200 | Main narrow-body stands |
| 2 | A300-600 | |
| 1 | A340-300 | |
| 1A, 2A | B777-300 | Wide-body overlay stands. If 1A is used, stands 1 and 2 are closed; if 2A is used, stands 2 and 3 are closed. |
| K1, K2, K3 | F2000 (business jets) | Eastern end of the apron |
De-icing
The de-icing area (100 × 100 m) is north of stands 1 and 2 and is marked on the ADC. While de-icing is in progress, the part of TWY C north of stands 1, 1A, 2, 2A and 3 (between TWY D and TWY E) is closed to taxiing aircraft. De-icing is available H24.
APU
At bridge stands, switch off the APU within 5 minutes of parking and use the bridge equipment for power and air. The APU may be started no earlier than 15 minutes before engine start.
Planning Taxi Time
Taxi distances at Trabzon are short, but they depend on the runway in use:
- RWY 11: departures taxi west along TWY C and TWY A to the RWY 11 threshold (full length). Stands at the eastern end (1–3, K1–K3) have the longest taxi.
- RWY 29: departures enter via TWY E (intersection) or backtrack to the RWY 29 turn pad for a full-length departure (see the EDITOR note above).
ATIS
Trabzon Information is broadcast on 118.625 MHz (D-ATIS is also available via ACARS). It includes the runway in use, the expected approach, weather, transition level and, when applicable, the PRS announcement. Always copy the ATIS before calling Ground.
Obtaining Clearance
There is no separate Delivery position in the AIP. Call Trabzon Ground (121.900) for your ATC clearance. In your initial call, include your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter you have received.
Pushback and Engine Start
Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready. Ground will either clear you or ask you to standby. Push-back is provided at all stands.
Taxi Procedures
Departures normally taxi along TWY C and then TWY A to the RWY 11 holding point, or to TWY E for RWY 29. Intersection departures are available (AIP AD 2.13; TODA equals TORA):
| Runway | Intersection | TORA | ASDA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | Full length (via A) | 2,640 m | 2,700 m |
| B | 1,845 m | 1,905 m | |
| D | 1,495 m | 1,555 m | |
| 29 | Full length | 2,640 m | 2,700 m |
| E | 1,545 m | 1,605 m |

Minimum Runway Occupancy Time for Departures
The LTCG AIP (AD 2.20) does not publish specific runway occupancy rules. With a single runway used for both arrivals and departures, be ready to depart as soon as you are cleared:
- Do not request line-up and take-off clearance unless you are fully ready for departure.
- If you cannot comply, inform ATC as soon as possible.
SIDs
P-RNAV approved aircraft fly the RNAV (GNSS) SIDs (radar required). If you do not have P-RNAV approval, advise ATC and expect a conventional SID. The SID end point must be the first point of your flight-planned route. Unless otherwise instructed by ATC, the maximum speed within the TMA is 250 KT IAS.
Terrain: the climb gradients at Trabzon are high. All RWY 11 RNAV SIDs require 7.9% up to 1,700 ft (conventional: 9% until 600 ft, then 7.9%). Check your performance before accepting a SID. The RWY 29 RNAV (SID-4) and conventional (SID-2) charts carry a caution: there are close-in obstacles requiring a higher climb gradient than the published PDG, which are not taken into account in the minimum climb gradient calculation (see AD 2.10).
| Runway | SID | Designator | Minimum climb gradient | Key restrictions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | NIVAX | 1A | 7.9% up to 1,700 ft | Course 092° to CG081 max 210 KT; CG049 at or below FL130 |

Note: the exit points differ between runways. NETPU and TEMEL have RNAV SIDs only from RWY 11, and ARLAT, ABVEX and DELEL only from RWY 29.
Conventional SIDs (TBN VOR/DME based) are also published for aircraft without P-RNAV approval:
- RWY 11 – 1U / 1X (initial track TBN R-099):
- TEMEL 1U, NIVAX 1U, NETPU 1U, ATPUM 1U, ERIDU 1X: 9% until passing 600 ft, then 7.9% until D4 TBN, then 4% until D8 TBN; then (except ATPUM 1U) back to TBN crossing 5,000 ft or above.
- ERIDU 1U: climb until 2,500 ft, then left turn back to TBN (4,000 ft or above); 9% until 600 ft, then 7.9% until 2,000 ft.
- BAVTI 1U, PIXAP 1U, MILQO 1U: climb to D15 TBN and follow the 15 DME arc, then back over TBN (FL150 / FL190 / FL150 or above); 9% until 600 ft, 7.9% until D4, then 5.24% until FL180 (BAVTI), FL260 (PIXAP) or FL150 (MILQO).
- RWY 29 – 1M (initial track TBN R-288; ERIDU 1M R-290):
- NIVAX 1M: climb until D6 TBN, then right turn to R-341. ATPUM 1M / NETPU 1M: after D6 TBN, right turn back to TBN, crossing 5,000 ft or above.
- TEMEL 1M: 4% until D10 TBN, then left turn to R-272. ERIDU 1M: R-290 direct to ERIDU, 5.24% until 3,000 ft.
- BAVTI 1M, PIXAP 1M, MILQO 1M: D15 TBN arc, then back over TBN; 5.24% until FL180 / FL260 / FL150.
Noise Abatement Procedures
Aircraft certified to ICAO Annex 16 Vol. I Chapter 3 must apply NADP-2; Chapter 2 aircraft apply NADP-1 only. All other aircraft apply NADP-1 or NADP-2. Noise abatement procedures apply until passing 3,000 ft. APU restrictions (see Ground Operations) also apply.
Airborne
Unless instructed otherwise, contact Trabzon Approach when airborne. Comply with all speed and altitude restrictions on the SID, and keep the published climb gradient. Terrain is close.
TWR: THY2RK, contact Trabzon Approach 130.225, goodbye.
Pilot: Trabzon Approach 130.225, THY2RK, goodbye.
Pilot: Trabzon Approach, THY2RK, passing 2,500 ft.
APP: THY2RK, Trabzon Approach, radar contact, climb FL150.
After Departure
After leaving the Trabzon TMA you will be handed over to Ankara Control (or the adjacent Rize–Artvin TMA unit for some eastbound routes), depending on your SID and route.
Thank you for flying with TRvACC — hope to see you again in Trabzon!
