Milas-Bodrum Airport Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTFE ADC)

Milas-Bodrum Airport (IATA: BJV, ICAO: LTFE) serves Bodrum and the south-western Aegean coast of Muğla province. It lies 35 km north-east of Bodrum, 18 km south-west of Milas and 75 km west of Muğla. Traffic is strongly seasonal: in summer the airport handles a large number of international charter and holiday flights in addition to the domestic network, while winter traffic is much lighter.

The airport has two parallel runways, 10L/28R (3,000 m × 45 m) and 10R/28L (2,940 m × 45 m), but only 10L/28R is used by civil traffic. RWY 10R/28L is used as a taxiway by civil aircraft and is used as a runway only in emergencies or when 10L/28R is closed for maintenance. Elevation is 21 ft and the transition altitude is 10,000 ft. The aerodrome is open H24 (ATS, customs and fuel all H24); fire-fighting category is 9.

All civil parking is on a single, long apron south of the runways, in front of the Domestic and International terminals; the General Aviation terminal is south-east of the apron next to the heliport. Military hook and net barriers are installed on 10L/28R, and the northern taxiways M1, M2 and M3 are used only by military traffic.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)

The term "Preferential Runway System (PRS)" indicates the runway that, at a particular time, is considered by the ATC unit to be the most suitable for use by aircraft expected to land at or take off from the aerodrome, taking into consideration aircraft performance, surface wind speed and its components. PRS operations contribute to the optimum use of airspace and aerodrome capacity.

The preferential runways for LTFE are RWY 10L and RWY 10R. Since 10R/28L is used as a taxiway, in practice this means RWY 10L is the default runway.

RWYCC (Runway Condition Code) Tail Wind Component (max)
RWYCC 6/6/6 (dry, maximum braking) 10 KT (included)
RWYCC reported at least 5 on any third of the runway (worse than dry) 5 KT (included)
  1. In PRS operations, the wind criteria above are applied depending on the runway surface condition.
  2. During PRS operations, ATC also takes into account ground wind, traffic situation, local meteorological conditions, environmental restrictions, technical infrastructure, noise abatement, etc.
  3. PRS operations are not available when:
    • the instrument approach/departure procedures for the preferred runway are not suitable for the existing weather,
    • the preferred runway is dry (RWYCC 6/6/6) and the tailwind component is greater than 10 KT,
    • RWYCC is reported at least 5 on any third of the preferred runway and the tailwind component is greater than 5 KT,
    • RWYCC is reported at least 5 on any third and a NOTAM/equivalent information (may be in the RCR) states the runway is slippery,
    • RWYCC is reported 4 or less on any third of the preferred runway,
    • heavy rain, thunderstorm or wind shear is reported on the approach or climb path of the preferred runway,
    • low visibility operations are in progress.
  4. When PRS is in use the ATIS will announce: "Preferential Runway Operations are in Progress".
  5. Pilots unable to comply with PRS must notify ATC when requesting start-up clearance, on first contact, or 20 minutes before ETA, whichever is earlier.

If you consider the runway in use unsuitable for safety or performance reasons, you may request another runway. ATC will accommodate the request at an appropriate time, but you may be subject to a long delay; ATC will tell you if the delay is expected to exceed 30 minutes.

Arrival Procedures

Milas-Bodrum is located inside the Milas (Bodrum) TMA, next to the Dalaman and İzmir TMAs. All published RNAV STARs are RNAV (GNSS) procedures and P-RNAV approval is required. Aircraft that filed PBN/D1, D2, O1 or O2 in their flight plan must fly the RNAV STARs. If you cannot comply with the RNAV procedure, report it on first contact. Conventional STARs based on the BDR VOR/DME also exist (see Conventional STARs).

On first contact with Bodrum Radar, report your callsign only (unless you are unable to fly the RNAV procedure). Check the ATIS to confirm that the published frequency is the one currently in use.

  • RADAR service is required for the RNAV STARs. ATC may clear you "direct to" a waypoint on the STAR for sequencing or separation; after reaching it, continue with the rest of the procedure.
  • Descent on all RNAV STARs is "as cleared". Speed and altitude restrictions on the STARs must be flown as published (see the charts below).
  • Aircraft vacating 10L/28R via a rapid exit taxiway have priority at taxiway intersections; all other traffic must give way.
  • After landing, continue onto RWY 10R/28L (used as a taxiway) without stopping at the runway holding points, unless Tower instructs otherwise.
  • Between 15 April and 15 October, training flights (circuits, touch-and-go, instrument approach practice) are not permitted. Between 15 September and 15 October, IFR training only (instrument navigation and ILS training) may be done with 24-hour prior coordination with Milas Bodrum Approach.
  • Military hook and net barriers are installed on 10L/28R (barrier sheds 2.7 m high, 455 m inside both thresholds, 64.5 m north and south of the centreline). Follow ATC instructions regarding the serviceable barriers for the landing direction in use.
  • Circling is not authorised north of the aerodrome (all approach charts). Circling OCA(H) is 1,600 ft (1,579 ft) for CAT A/B and 2,050 ft (2,029 ft) for CAT C/D (VOR/NDB A: 2,300 ft (2,279 ft) for all categories).

Low Visibility Procedure

Both ends of 10L/28R have an ILS CAT II (10L: IBDR 109.30, 28R: IGML 108.70) with CAT II approach lighting (900 m barrette system). The CAT II approaches are ILS Y CAT II RWY 10L (IAC-7, OCA(H) 132 ft (122 ft), RA 124 ft) and ILS V CAT II RWY 28R (IAC-10, OCA(H) 199 ft (178 ft), RA 178 ft); both require special aircrew and aircraft certification.

Runways and ILS

Runway ILS Frequency Category Notes
10L IBDR 109.30 MHz (GP 332.0, DME CH 30X) CAT II Preferential runway (PRS). GP 3.3°, RDH 52 ft, PAPI 3.3° (left, MEHT 52 ft). THR elev 10 ft
28R IGML 108.70 MHz (GP 330.5, DME CH 24X) CAT II Steep glide path 3.9°, RDH 59 ft, PAPI 3.9° (left, MEHT 68 ft). THR elev 21 ft
10R / 28L No ILS Runway normally used as taxiway. 10R: VOR Y approach; PAPI 3.3°. 28L: 440 m displaced threshold; PAPI 3.9°

The RWY 28R ILS uses a steep 3.9° glide path. All 28R approach charts carry the caution "appropriate aircraft and crew qualifications are required". AD 2.22 states that commercial air transport operators shall consider LTFE a Category B aerodrome (EASA AMC1 ORO.FC.105) for the RWY 28R steep ILS (CAT I and CAT II). Plan a stabilised approach and check your aircraft's steep-approach limits.

Other navaids: BDR VOR/DME 116.7 (CH 114X) and BDR NDB 389 kHz, co-located north-west of the 10L threshold, and TACAN BOD (CH 69X).

STARs

RNAV STARs start at OKESA, ERFES, TUFUB, OZNEF, YUNUS and KAVAK. These fixes must be the last point of your flight-planned route (e.g. ... UW78 CRD UW95 TAVAS UW95 KAVAK).

Active Runway Configuration Designator Ends at Remarks
West (RWY 10L) 1F ROXEP KAVAK, ERFES, YUNUS, OZNEF and TUFUB
1H ROXEP OKESA 1H
East (RWY 28R) 1J TEKBU KAVAK, ERFES, YUNUS, OZNEF and TUFUB
1P TEKBU OKESA 1P

There is only one STAR per entry point and runway, so no "default designator" choice is needed.

West Configuration (RWY 10L)

All arrivals end at ROXEP (3,600 ft, max 185 KT) on the extended centreline, then heading 102°.

  • From the north (OKESA 1H, OZNEF 1F, TUFUB 1F): cross OKESA at or below 10,000 ft (max 250 KT), then FE813, ARVUT at 5,000 ft (max 200 KT) and OTPEV at 4,000 ft to ROXEP. TUFUB 1F routes via FE800 to OKESA.
  • From the east (KAVAK 1F, ERFES 1F): via CENGO (max 250 KT), OSKUT at or above FL120, FE811 (max 220 KT) and FE810 to OTPEV (4,000 ft, max 200 KT). KAVAK 1F also has crossing restrictions of FL240+ at KAVAK, FL180+ at NEPNO and FL160+ at ODABU.
  • From the south (YUNUS 1F): via FE812 at or above 10,000 ft, FE811 (max 220 KT) and FE810 to OTPEV (4,000 ft, max 200 KT).

The STAR chart states that ATC's first option will be to clear you for the final approach ILS (IAC-6 / IAC-7) or RNP (IAC-11) RWY 10L at or before ROXEP. Check the ATIS for the approach in use.

RNAV STARs RWY 10L (AIP AD 2 LTFE STAR-2)

East Configuration (RWY 28R)

  • North-west sector: 8,500 ft
  • North-east sector: 7,000 ft
  • South-east sector: 8,500 ft
  • South-west sector: 5,000 ft

Minimum radar vectoring altitudes (AD 2 LTFE MRVC, based on the İzmir/Akdağ radar) range from 3,600 ft to 8,000 ft.

Terrain, Obstacles and Restricted Areas

  • The approach charts show high ground close to both final approaches, with spot heights of 3,553 ft north of the RWY 10L final approach and 3,963 ft north of the RWY 28R final approach.
  • The Aerodrome Obstacle Chart (AOC-1) notes high ground beyond the take-off flight area, rising to 660 m at 19,000 m and 1,250 m at 28,000 m, and high ground of 430 m at 20,000 m.
  • Restricted areas LTGULLUK1 (SFC–1,500 ft AMSL) and LTGULLUK2 (SFC–500 ft AMSL) lie under the RWY 10L final approach; restricted areas LTR26 (SFC–5,000 ft AMSL) and LTR28 (SFC–2,000 ft AMSL) and danger area LTD39 (MSL–UNL) are shown on the SID/STAR charts.

Bird Hazard

The bird concentration chart (AD 2 LTFE BRD) shows cormorant, flamingo, seagull, duck and heron concentrations around the western end of the runways and in the bay to the south-west, and starlings on the aerodrome in January and February. Fish breeding pools and garbage dump areas around the airport attract birds. Seasonal bird movements at 500–1,500 ft (December and February) cross the aerodrome along a north-north-west / south-east line.

Radio Failure

For IFR flights to LTFE (AD 2.22), squawk 7600 and:

  • Outside the TMA: follow the flight plan route at the last assigned and acknowledged flight level. After passing UMRON, OKESA or ERFES, fly the relevant STAR for 3 minutes, then proceed to BDR VOR descending to 9,000 ft. Descend to 6,000 ft over BDR VOR, then fly the instrument approach and land.
  • Inside the TMA, at or above 6,000 ft: follow the last assigned and acknowledged ATC instructions for 3 minutes, then proceed to BDR VOR descending to 6,000 ft. Leave BDR at 6,000 ft for the instrument approach and land.
  • Inside the TMA, below 6,000 ft and at or above 5,000 ft: climb to 6,000 ft and proceed to BDR VOR, leave BDR at 6,000 ft for the instrument approach and land.
  • Below 5,000 ft: proceed to the relevant final approach fix and land.

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

In normal operations RWY 10L/28R (north) is the only active runway. RWY 10R/28L (south) is used as a parallel taxiway between the apron and the active runway. The apron is connected to 10R/28L by TWYs A1, B1, C1, D1 and E1, and 10R/28L is connected to 10L/28R by TWYs A, B, C, D and E:

  • A (east end) and E (west end) are the full-length entries for RWY 28R and RWY 10L.
  • B, C and D are rapid exit taxiways (RETIL installed).
  • Entry to 10L/28R from TWY C is only by Tower instruction (no-entry sign on the chart).
  • TWY E1 may only be used by aircraft with a wingspan of 31 m or less (most airliners, e.g. A320/B737, cannot use it).
  • TWYs M1, M2 and M3 (north side) are only used by military traffic; civil traffic needs a special permit.
  • Stop bars are installed at TWYs A, B, D, E, M1, M2 and M3; runway guard lights at TWYs A, B, D, E, A1, B1, C1 and D1.
  • The engine test area is at the RWY 10R threshold (west end of 10R/28L).
  • Reversing using reverse thrust is prohibited.

  • An automatic visual docking guidance system is available at stands 1–8, 8A and 8B. At docking stands, switch the APU off within 5 minutes of parking; it may be started 15 minutes before estimated start-up.
  • Push-back is mandatory on all apron stands (except aircraft of 0–2 tonnes).

General Aviation stands

  • Stands 25–58 are for general aviation aircraft with a maximum wingspan of 31 m (PRKG: G550 on 25–35, G650 on 36–58).
  • On the commercial part of the apron, stands 65, 76, 77 (G550) and 83 (G280) are business-jet sized.
  • Aircraft using stands 38–47 enter via TWY LINE G. They may exit to TWY LINE K under the pilot's responsibility, with Tower permission and a ground-handling escort.
  • Aircraft arriving from uncontrolled aerodromes must declare this to Tower and will be parked on stands 25, 26, 73, 74 or 83 for security checks.

De-icing

No de-icing facilities are available at LTFE.

Hot Spots

Hot Spot Location Caution
HS1 Apron → TWY A1 (east end) Apron taxiway centreline crosses the vehicle service road
HS2 Apron taxiway near stands 8A, 8B, 75, 76 Service road crossing; forward manoeuvres and push-backs from stands 8A, 8B, 75, 76
HS3 Apron, near TWY D1 North–south service road crosses the apron taxiway (Cat D/E stands to the east, Cat A/B/C stands to the west)
HS4 Apron / TWY D1 area ARFF emergency exit road crosses the apron and RWYs 10L/R
HS5 GA apron, stands 38–47 Service road in front of stands 38–47 when taxiing out to LINE K

Planning Taxi Time

Taxi times depend on the runway in use, as all traffic uses 10R/28L as the parallel taxiway:

  • RWY 10L: departures taxi west along 10R/28L to TWY E; aircraft parked at the International Terminal (east end) have the longest taxi.
  • RWY 28R: departures taxi east along 10R/28L to TWY A; General Aviation stands (west end) have the longest taxi.

ATIS

Milas Information is broadcast on 128.500 MHz (D-ATIS via ACARS also available). When PRS is in use the ATIS announces "Preferential Runway Operations are in Progress". Always copy the ATIS before calling Ground.

Obtaining Clearance

There is no separate Delivery position (the ADC lists no Delivery frequency). Call Milas Ground (121.900) for your ATC clearance. In your initial call, include your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter you have received.

Pushback and Engine Start

Push-back is mandatory on all apron stands. Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready. Ground will either clear you or ask you to standby.

  • Stands 38–47 (GA): exit is to LINE K with Tower permission and a ground-handling escort.
  • Engine runs at idle on a stand (max 3 minutes) must be requested from Milas Ground.

Taxi Procedures

Departures normally taxi from the apron via A1, B1, C1 or D1 onto 10R/28L (used as taxiway) and then to holding point E for RWY 10L, or A for RWY 28R. The AIP publishes declared distances for intersection take-offs (AD 2.13):

Runway Intersection TORA
10L Full length (E) 3,000 m
D 2,050 m
C 1,490 m
28R Full length (A) 3,000 m
B 2,200 m
C 1,680 m

Entry to RWY 10L/28R from TWY C is only by Tower instruction.

SIDs

P-RNAV approved aircraft (PBN/D1, D2, O1 or O2) must fly the RNAV (GNSS) SIDs. RNAV SIDs end at AKBUK, YUNUS, ERFES, KAVAK and IMR, which must be the first point of your flight-planned route (e.g. KAVAK UW95 ...). If you are not P-RNAV approved, advise ATC. RADAR service is required. ATC may clear you "direct to" a SID waypoint; after reaching it, continue with the rest of the SID.

All RNAV SIDs start with a climb on course 102°M (10L) to FE090 or 282°M (28R) to FE071 before the first turn. Note the high climb gradients (6.0–6.5% up to 6,000 ft) for RWY 10L. On first contact after departure, report your callsign only (SID chart remark).

Conventional SIDs

Conventional SIDs based on the BDR VOR/DME (AD 2 LTFE SID-1 and SID-2) are available for aircraft without P-RNAV approval:

Runway SID Description Climb gradient
10L/R AKBUK 1B Intercept R-102, at D9 turn right to BDR VOR, then right to intercept R-324 to AKBUK 5.5% (335 ft/NM) until passing the VOR; max IAS 204 KT until turning inbound to the VOR
AKBUK 1N Intercept R-102, at D11 follow the 11 DME arc left to intercept R-324 to AKBUK 5.7% (346 ft/NM) until intercepting R-324
YUNUS 1B Intercept R-102, at D9 follow the 9 DME arc right to intercept R-155 to YUNUS 5.7% (346 ft/NM) until crossing 6,000 ft; max IAS 204 KT until intercepting R-155
CENGO 1B Intercept R-112 to CENGO 5.5% (335 ft/NM) until joining the airway
28L/R AKBUK 1A Intercept R-279, at D7 turn left to BDR VOR, then left to intercept R-324 to AKBUK 5% (304 ft/NM) until passing the VOR
AKBUK 1E Intercept R-279, at D12 follow the 12 DME arc right to intercept R-324 to AKBUK 5% (304 ft/NM) until the 12 DME fix
YUNUS 1A Intercept R-279, at D7 follow the 7 DME arc left to intercept R-155 to YUNUS 5% (304 ft/NM) until intercepting R-155
CENGO 1A Intercept R-279, at D7 turn left to BDR VOR, then R-112 to CENGO 5% (304 ft/NM) until passing the VOR
CENGO 1E Intercept R-279, at D7 follow the 7 DME arc left to intercept R-112 to CENGO 5% (304 ft/NM) until intercepting R-112

Noise Abatement Procedures

Aircraft certified to ICAO Annex 16 Vol. I Chapter 3 must apply NADP-2; Chapter 2 aircraft apply NADP-1 only. All other aircraft apply NADP-1 or NADP-2. Noise abatement procedures apply until passing 3,000 ft.

Airborne

Unless instructed otherwise, contact Bodrum Radar when airborne. On first contact, report your callsign only (as printed on the SID charts). Comply with all speed and altitude restrictions on the SID.

TWR: THY2RK, contact Bodrum Radar 119.500, goodbye.

Pilot: Bodrum Radar 119.500, THY2RK, goodbye.

Pilot: Bodrum Radar, THY2RK.

APP: THY2RK, Bodrum Radar, radar contact, climb FL150.

After Departure

After leaving the Milas TMA you will be handed over to Ankara Control, or to the adjacent Dalaman / İzmir sectors, depending on your SID and route.

Thank you for flying with TRvACC — hope to see you again in Bodrum!

VFR Procedures

The Milas/Bodrum TMA has designated VFR routes. They are not used for separating VFR from IFR traffic; the pilot remains responsible for separation from other traffic, terrain and weather. If you have to leave a VFR route (e.g. due to weather), inform ATC immediately and rejoin as soon as possible. VFR traffic shall not pass through the CTR (Milas CTR: 5 NM radius centred 371456N 0274058E, SFC–2,500 ft AMSL) unless authorised by Tower. VFR traffic without radio destined to an aerodrome in the Milas TMA shall enter the CTR via these routes without affecting the instrument approach, missed approach and SID routes.

Arrivals join the route at the nearest of these entry points after entering the TMA:

Route Points
SOUTH BODRUM – TUZLA
EAST GÖKOVA – ÖREN – MUMCULAR – TUZLA
NORTH BAFA – SELİMİYE – MİLAS

Departures fly the same routes in the opposite direction.

Transit routes through the TMA:

Route Points
NORTH – SOUTH BAFA – YENİHİSAR – BODRUM
NORTH1 – EAST BAFA – TURGUT – ÖREN
NORTH2 – EAST BAFA – TURGUT – GÖKOVA
NORTH – CENTER BAFA – SELİMİYE – MUMCULAR – ÖREN – GÖKOVA

State aircraft on operational (OAT) flights are exempt.

VFR reporting points (BDR VOR radial/distance): BAFA (R-313/D19), YENİHİSAR (R-287/D20), SELİMİYE (R-003/D10), MİLAS (R-065/D7), TURGUT (R-062/D20), TUZLA (R-207/D6), BODRUM (R-213/D17), MUMCULAR (R-167/D10), ÖREN (R-127/D20), GÖKOVA (R-107/D35).
