Erzurum Airport

From VATSIM Türkiye Wiki
Erzurum Airport Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTCE ADC)

Erzurum Airport (IATA: ERZ, ICAO: LTCE) serves the city of Erzurum in eastern Anatolia and lies 13 km north-west of the city centre. It is a joint military/civil aerodrome (AIP: "Available to: Military / Civil"), operated by DHMİ, and is open H24 for IFR and VFR traffic, with H24 customs, ATS and de-icing.

At 5,765 ft it is one of the highest airports in Türkiye. The AIP gives a reference temperature of 30 °C and a mean low temperature of −26 °C, so expect real winter operations: snow clearing, de-icing/anti-icing and changing braking action. The transition altitude is 15,000 ft, and the instrument approaches start at 12,000–13,000 ft.

There are two parallel runways, both 3,810 m long:

  • 08L/26R – 3,810 m × 45 m, asphalt. This is the instrument runway: ILS CAT II/III-A on 26R, ILS CAT I on 08L.
  • 08R/26L – 3,810 m × 30 m, concrete. The AIP calls it the spare runway. It has military hook and net barriers, taxiway-type edge lighting, and no ILS, and it is used as the parallel taxiway for 08L/26R.

The civil terminal and Apron A1 are north of the runways. Aprons A2 and A3 are military, and Apron A4 and TWY J belong to the General Directorate of Security. Because of the elevation, true airspeed and ground speed on approach and take-off are noticeably higher than the indicated airspeed. Plan your descent and take-off performance accordingly.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)

AD 2 LTCE does not publish a Preferential Runway System. The runway in use is selected by Erzurum ATC. Check the ATIS (Erzurum Information 119.800) for the runway and approach in use.

Things to keep in mind when you plan:

  • All instrument approaches and RNAV SIDs/STARs are for RWY 08L/26R. The conventional VOR/NDB approaches and SIDs/STARs are charted for "08L/R" and "26L/R".
  • RWY 26R has the better approach: ILS CAT II / CAT III-A (IERZ 110.5), precision approach lighting CAT III-A (900 m), and an RNP approach.
  • RWY 08L has an ILS CAT I (IEZR 110.7) and simple approach lighting (510 m).
  • There is no back-track on RWY 08L/26R. You enter and leave the runway only via the connecting taxiways (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J) and RWY 08R/26L (AD 2.20).

Arrival Procedures

Erzurum Airport lies inside the Erzurum TMA. There are two kinds of STAR, both starting at the same eight TMA boundary fixes:

  • RNAV (GNSS) STARs (STAR-3 for RWY 08L, STAR-4 for RWY 26R). RNP 1 required; otherwise advise ATC. They end at the final approach fix, and ATC then clears you for the final approach.
  • Conventional STARs (STAR-1 for RWY 08L/R, STAR-2 for RWY 26L/R). Fly direct from the boundary fix to the ERZ VOR/NDB, then follow the instrument approach. The speed restriction is max IAS 250 KT within the TMA unless otherwise instructed by ATC.

Approach service is provided by Erzurum Approach (124.300), or by Erzurum Tower when required or when Approach transfers it (AD 2.17). The control zone is a 5 NM radius circle centred on 395724N 0411225E, from the surface to 7,000 ft AMSL.

  • Descent on the RNAV STARs is "as cleared": fly the charted minimum/maximum levels and wait for ATC to clear you lower.
  • The RNAV STARs end at the FAF with max IAS 180 KT. The STAR-3 chart says ATC will clear you for the final approach published on IAC-4 or IAC-5 (ILS RWY 08L). The STAR-4 chart refers to IAC-8 (RNP RWY 26R).
  • For radio failure during an RNAV (GNSS) approach, see Radio Failure (AD 2.22).

Bird Hazard

The AIP (AD 2.23 and the BRD chart) gives a strong bird warning for Erzurum:

  • Local bird movement generally starts between 03:30 and 05:00 UTC and ends between 15:00 and 16:00 UTC. Birds move towards the south-west/west in the morning and towards the north-east/east in the evening. The main species is the Lake Van (Armenian) gull, with about 11,000 birds on the Erzurum plain. They are scattered in summer and in large flocks from October to May, and they fly up to 2,900 m (9,514 ft).
  • There are seasonal migration routes NE–SW and E–W. Spring migration runs from March to the end of May and autumn migration from September to the end of November. The most threatening flocks are Ruddy Shelduck and Pintail, with more than 10,000 birds in the season.
  • Large water puddles about 3 km east of the RWY 26R threshold attract gulls, storks, ducks and other migratory birds, which sometimes fly towards the airport. Pilots are advised to exercise caution.
  • According to the BRD chart, bird density is highest in April and September, peak times are 03:30–05:00 and 16:30–18:00, and birds fly at various levels between 0 and 4,000 m.

Low Visibility Procedure

Per AD 2.22 (Erzurum Airport Low Visibility Procedures):

  • RWY 26R is approved for CAT II and CAT III-A operations, subject to serviceability of the required facilities, for operators whose minima are approved by their civil aviation authority. Special aircrew and aircraft certification is required.
  • While CAT II/III-A operations are in progress, special ATC low visibility procedures apply. Pilots are informed by ATIS or RTF.
  • Departing aircraft must use the RWY 26R CAT II/III-A holding points on RWY 08R/26L and on TWYs B, C, E, F, G and H. The CAT II/III-A holding point on TWY D is NO ENTRY.
  • During CAT III-A operations, RWY 08R/26L is used as the parallel taxiway. At the 26L end, a runway-holding position with stop bar lights and a CAT III holding sign is set up on the runway, 163.5 m from the 26L threshold, because of the ILS glide path sensitive area. Follow Tower instructions (AD 2.20).
  • Arriving aircraft: all runway exits are lit. Select the first convenient exit.
  • Expect a reduced landing rate: 8 per hour at RVR 1,000–550 m, 3 per hour at RVR 550–300 m and 3 per hour below 300 m.

The only published CAT II chart is ILS Y CAT II RWY 26R (IAC-7). It has a radio altimeter minimum of 133 ft and a glide path angle of 3.2°.

Radio Failure

AD 2.22 publishes radio failure procedures for IFR flights flying the RNAV (GNSS) procedures:

RWY 08L (FAF CEVIZ):

  • At or after CEVIZ: continue the approach, fly the ILS procedure and land.
  • Before CEVIZ, at or above 13,000 ft: squawk 7600 and follow the flight plan route at the last assigned and acknowledged level. After passing ETFUL, proceed direct to ERZ VOR or NDB, descending to or maintaining 13,000 ft. Leave 13,000 ft at ERZ, then fly the instrument approach procedure and land.
  • Before CEVIZ, below 13,000 ft: follow the RNAV (GNSS) procedure laterally and climb to or maintain 13,000 ft. Then proceed direct to ERZ VOR or NDB, leave 13,000 ft at ERZ, fly the instrument approach and land.

RWY 26R (FAF NETCE):

  • The same procedure applies with NETCE as the FAF and LUMHE in place of ETFUL. At or after NETCE, continue and land using the RNAV (GNSS) procedure.

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

RWY 08L/26R (north) is the main runway. RWY 08R/26L (south, the spare runway) is used as the parallel taxiway, and ATC routes traffic along it. There is no back-track on RWY 08L/26R. Entries and exits are only via the connecting taxiways A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and J, and via RWY 08R/26L (AD 2.20).

  • TWYs A, B, C, D, E and F link 08L/26R with 08R/26L. A is at the 26R end, F is at the 08L end, and B and E are the intersection-departure taxiways.
  • TWYs G and H link the civil Apron A1 with 08L/26R. TWY G and its part of Apron A1 are currently CLOSED due to construction (ADC/PRKG), so TWY H is the only access to Apron A1. TWYs G and H have centreline lighting and a VOR checkpoint.
  • Stop bars are installed at TWYs A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H. There are no runway guard lights.
  • Military hook barrier housings stand 48 m either side of the 08R/26L centreline (453 m from the 08R threshold and 438 m from the 26L threshold). Net barrier housings stand 48.5 m either side, 41.2 m behind the 08R threshold. Follow ATC instructions for the serviceable hook and net barriers.
  • Military areas: Aprons A2 and A3 and the M taxiways are military. M1, M2 and M5–M9 lead only to military hangars and are not suitable for civil aircraft. Apron A4 and TWY J are for flights of the General Directorate of Security and cannot be used by civil traffic. TWY J can only be used by UAVs/UCAVs with suitable wingspan, and a 3 m high military generator building stands 17 m west of its centreline. Military aprons and taxiways are used only by military traffic unless the airport authority issues a special permit.
  • Engine test areas are on the runway at the 08L and 26R thresholds. Tests are done on ATC instruction, with the aircraft facing into the wind.
Erzurum Aerodrome Chart

Apron, Gates and Stands

Aircraft Parking/Docking Chart (AIP AD 2 LTCE PRKG)

Apron A1 (civil)

Apron A1 is in front of the terminal building. It is concrete (PCN 110), its elevation is 1,756 m, and it has taxiway centreline lighting.

  • Stands 1–14 in one row. Stands 1–5 and 7–13 are marked for the B737-800, stand 6 for the A310 and stand 14 for the A300.
  • Stands 1–6 are currently CLOSED due to construction, together with TWY G. Use stands 7–14.
  • The aircraft stand guidance in the AIP is limited to guide lines and stand numbers (no visual docking system is listed).

Winter Operations, De-icing and Anti-icing

  • De-icing is available H24 (AD 2.3 / 2.4). Clearing equipment is mechanical snow removal plus chemical de-icing. Clearance priorities are standard (AD 1.2.2), and braking action is measured with a runway friction tester (AD 2.7).
  • Anti-icing is done in the area next to the apron edge south of stand 14 on Apron A1 (marked "ANTI-ICING AREA" on the ADC, next to TWY H). Aircraft are pushed back into this area, and the push-back must keep clear of TWY H. Ground handling and airlines are responsible for safety during anti-icing, engine start and other checks there (AD 2.20).
  • The CBR (ground bearing strength) within the RESAs can vary with meteorological conditions (AD 2.12).

Hot Spots

The AIP publishes no hot spots for LTCE.

Planning Taxi Time

All departures leave Apron A1 via TWY H and use RWY 08R/26L as the parallel taxiway:

  • RWY 26R: short taxi east along 08R/26L to TWY A.
  • RWY 08L: long taxi west along 08R/26L to TWY F.

ATIS

Erzurum Information is broadcast on 119.800 MHz (H24). D-ATIS is available to ACARS-equipped aircraft (labels: A arrival, D departure, C contract, T terminate). Always copy the ATIS before calling Ground.

Obtaining Clearance

There is no Delivery position (the ADC shows Delivery "–"). Call Erzurum Ground (121.900) for your ATC clearance. In your initial call, include your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter you have received.

Pushback and Engine Start

Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready. Ground will either clear you or ask you to stand by. If you need anti-icing, expect to be pushed into the anti-icing area south of stand 14 (see above).

Taxi Procedures

Departures taxi via TWY H, cross RWY 08L/26R, and continue via TWY B onto RWY 08R/26L (used as taxiway). From there:

  • RWY 26R: taxi east to TWY A and the 26R holding point.
  • RWY 08L: taxi west to TWY F and the 08L holding point.

Remember there is no back-track on 08L/26R. When CAT II/III-A operations are in progress, use the CAT II/III holding points (see Low Visibility Procedure), including the holding position on RWY 08R/26L near the 26L threshold. Intersection departures are possible as shown in the table.

SIDs

All SIDs end at HOCAM, DAMAT, GELIN, TURNA, SUSUZ, TAVUS, ALVAR or VIRAN, which must be the first point of your flight-planned route. The RNAV (GNSS) SIDs are published for RWY 08L (designator Y) and RWY 26R (designator B). RNP 1 required; otherwise advise ATC. The conventional SIDs (based on ERZ VOR/DME) are published for RWY 08L/R (1L) and RWY 26L/R (1H).

Conventional SIDs (SID-1/1A and SID-2/2A, based on ERZ VOR/DME; max IAS 250 KT within the TMA unless otherwise instructed by ATC):

  • RWY 08L/R – 1L (SID-1): after take-off, intercept R-079 and cross the 4 DME fix at or above 7,500 ft. Then turn left and fly heading 228° to the VOR, crossing it at or above 9,700 ft. From there:
    • Climb gradient 6% (365 ft/NM) until passing the VOR, and max 210 KT IAS until inbound to the VOR.
    • Then intercept the outbound radial and join the airway: DAMAT R-264, HOCAM R-308, VIRAN R-061, ALVAR R-078, TAVUS R-096, SUSUZ R-125, TURNA R-158, GELIN R-226. Climb at 4% (243 ft/NM) until passing 14,000 ft (VIRAN 1L: 13,000 ft).
  • RWY 26L/R – 1H (SID-2):
    • DAMAT 1H: intercept R-264 with a climb gradient of 5.8% (350 ft/NM) until 20 DME, cross it at or above 11,500 ft, then proceed to DAMAT.
    • All other 1H SIDs: intercept R-264 at 5.8% until 10 DME and cross it at or above 8,300 ft. Then turn right to the VOR on 099°, crossing it at or above 11,000 ft, then intercept HOCAM R-308, VIRAN R-061, ALVAR R-078, TAVUS R-096, SUSUZ R-125, TURNA R-158 or GELIN R-226 and join the airway.
