Diyarbakır Airport Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTCC ADC)

Diyarbakır Airport (IATA: DIY, ICAO: LTCC) serves Diyarbakır, the largest city of south-eastern Türkiye. It is located 10 km south of the city centre and is a joint military/civil aerodrome (AIP: "Available to: Military-Civil"), with DHMİ as aerodrome operator. The airport lies inside the Diyarbakır MTMA (military TMA) and the Tower, Approach and ATIS also publish UHF frequencies for military traffic.

The aerodrome has two parallel runways, 16L/34R and 16R/34L (both 3,549 m × 45 m, concrete). Elevation is 2,260 ft and the transition altitude is 10,000 ft (transition level by ATC). The aerodrome, ATS, customs, fuel, handling and de-icing are all H24.

Runway status in AIRAC 2610 — please read: AD 2.12, AD 2.20 and the ADC notes state that RWY 16R/34L shall be used as a taxiway by civil aircraft and only used as a runway in emergencies or when 16L/34R is closed for maintenance. However, the current ADC (AMDT 05/26, "CHANGE: RWY 16L/34R UNDER CONSTRUCTION") shows RWY 16L/34R hatched as "under construction for civil use", and the newest procedures (RNAV STAR-5, RNP Z RWY 34L, NDB/VOR V RWY 34L and 16R) are published for RWY 34L/16R. Check the ATIS / ATC for the runway in use.

The civil terminal and apron are on the west side of the field, connected to the runways by TWYs K and W. The large military areas (TWYs MIL-B to MIL-H) are on the east side and are not available to civil aircraft. The Karacadağ massif (spot height 6,676 ft) rises south-west of the airport.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)

The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System for LTCC (AD 2.20 contains no PRS section and AD 2.22 Flight Procedures is NIL). The runway in use is selected by Diyarbakır Tower/Approach according to the surface wind and traffic, and is announced on the ATIS.

Points from the AIP that affect runway selection:

  1. RWY 16R/34L is published as a taxiway for civil aircraft, usable as a runway only in emergencies or when 16L/34R is closed for maintenance (but see the runway-status note above).
  2. Civil aircraft with a wingspan greater than 36 m can not use RWY 16R/34L.
  3. Because of obstacles within the RWY 16R/34L runway strip, civil operations on 16R/34L constitute a safety risk when: the crosswind component exceeds 20 KT; the Runway Condition Code (RCC) is 3 or below (wet, slippery wet or water-covered runway); wind shear is reported by pilots; there are thunderstorms and lightning; or low visibility conditions exist. Under these circumstances take-off and landing are at the pilot's discretion and responsibility.
  4. There are hook and net arrester barriers on both runways (see Ground Operations). ADC caution: follow ATC instructions for the serviceable hook and net barriers due to the runway heading to be used for landing operations.
  5. Only RWY 34R has an ILS (CAT I). RWY 34L has an RNP and an RNAV STAR; RWY 16L/16R have NDB/VOR approaches only.

Arrival Procedures

Diyarbakır is located inside the Diyarbakır MTMA. Arrivals are flown on conventional STARs based on the DYB VOR/DME (STAR-1 and STAR-4) or the DYB NDB with DME (STAR-2 and STAR-3), all ending at the DYB VOR/NDB, which is located south of the runways. One RNAV (GNSS) STAR (STAR-5, RNP 1) exists for RWY 34L only and links to the RNP Z RWY 34L approach.

  • On first contact with Diyarbakır Approach, report if you are unable to comply with the RNAV STAR (STAR-5). RNP 1 is required; otherwise advise ATC.
  • The RNAV STAR will only be executed by aircraft that will fly the RNP Z RWY 34L approach (IAC-10).
  • Max IAS in the STAR holdings is 230 KT.
  • Training landings and take-offs by civilian flight schools, amateur and sportive activities, and operations such as traffic pattern and instrument approach practice are not permitted due to heavy military traffic.
  • All civil IFR/VFR flights, scheduled and non-scheduled, need an "Aerodrome Approval" from the airport authority at least 3 hours in advance (see Ground Operations).

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

The civil apron and terminal are on the west side, north of the field centre. TWY K and TWY W connect the apron with the runways; TWY J, H1 and H2 lead to the northern (16L/16R) thresholds, and K1, F1, E1, D1, C1 and B1 connect 16R/34L with 16L/34R along the field (B1 at the southern, 34L/34R end).

Restrictions from the AIP (AD 2.8, AD 2.20 and ADC notes):

  • TWYs to be used by civil aircraft: B1, C1, D1, E1, F1, K1, H1, H2, J, W and K.
  • TWYs MIL-B, MIL-C, MIL-D, MIL-E, MIL-F, MIL-G and MIL-H are only used by military aircraft.
  • Aircraft with a wingspan of more than 50 m cannot use TWY K (the K strip does not meet the standards).
  • Civil aircraft with a wingspan greater than 36 m cannot use RWY 16R/34L (including as a taxiway route).
  • Civil aircraft will not use TWY H1 during engine testing of military aircraft (engine testing area near H2/J).
  • There are no stop bars or runway guard lights. TWY lighting is edge only.
  • Hook and net arrester barriers: hook barrier barracks 80 m east/west of the 16L/34R centreline at 428 m from the 16L THR and 419.5 m from the 34R THR, and 75 m east/west of the 16R/34L centreline at 428 m from the 16R THR and 412.5 m from the 34L THR; net barrier posts near all four thresholds (barracks 2.4 m, posts 1.5 m high).
