Konya Airport Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTAN ADC)

Konya Airport (IATA: KYA, ICAO: LTAN) serves the city of Konya in Central Anatolia and lies 18 km north of the city. It is a joint military–civil aerodrome and a major air base: the AIP lists it as "Available to: Military - Civil". The civil apron with the new civil terminal is on the east side of the airfield, next to the military apron and military terminal; the RAPCON, the control tower and most of the military facilities are on the west side.

The airport has two parallel runways, 01R/19L (east) and 01L/19R (west), both 3,348 m × 45 m with a composite surface (the first 150 m at every threshold is concrete, the rest asphalt). Elevation is 3,392 ft and the transition altitude is 10,000 ft. The only ILS is on RWY 01L (ILS CAT I, IKNY 108.9). Both runways are equipped with military hook and net arrester barriers.

All aerodrome services (ATS, customs, fuel, handling, de-icing, etc.) are H24. Because of intense military training, civil training flights are not allowed at Konya, and all civil flights need prior approval from the airport authority (see Arrival Procedures).

Runway in Use

The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System (PRS) for LTAN. The runway in use is selected by ATC, taking into account the surface wind and the available procedures, and is broadcast on the ATIS. Low visibility procedures are not applied at Konya (AD 2.20).

Things to know when planning:

  • RWY 01L is the only runway with an ILS CAT I (IKNY 108.9 MHz, two variants ILS Z and ILS W). It has a Calvert CAT I precision approach lighting system (898 m, of which 600 m flashing). LOC U / LOC T and the military RNP RWY 01L also serve this runway.
  • RWY 01R has a Calvert CAT I precision approach lighting system (900 m, of which 600 m flashing) but no ILS; its procedures are VOR/NDB Y and VOR/NDB W.
  • RWY 19L and RWY 19R have no ILS and a simple approach lighting system (420 m). Their procedures are VOR/NDB approaches (19L: VOR Z, VOR X; 19R: VOR V, VOR S).
  • All four runway ends have PAPI 3° (MEHT: 01R 55 ft, 19L 55 ft, 01L 49 ft, 19R 57 ft).
  • The SIDs and STARs are published per runway direction (RWY 01L/R and RWY 19L/R) and serve both parallel runways.
  • Arrester gear: hook barriers and net barriers are installed on both runways. Follow ATC instructions for the serviceable hook and net barriers, which depend on the runway direction used for landing (ADC caution; AD 2.13).

Arrival Procedures

Konya lies inside the Konya MTMA (military TMA); the Antalya TMA lies to the west. The aerodrome control zone (Konya CTR) is a circle of 5 NM radius centred on 37°58'56"N 032°33'58"E, from SFC to 6,500 ft AMSL. Approach service is provided by Konya Approach (122.100).

  • Contact Konya Approach before entering the Konya CTR (AD 2.22). The AIP states that the speed within the CTR is "300 Knots" (AD 2.22, Turkish text: "Kontrol sahası sürati 300 Knot tır").
  • All arriving traffic shall fly the STARs (AD 2.22).
  • Prior approval (AD 2.20 G): because of limited parking space, all aircraft planning to use Konya Airport must contact the airport authority at least 4 hours in advance to obtain approval (if a previously approved flight changes, approval must be obtained again), and submit their flight plan at least 2 hours before departure.
  • Aircraft restrictions (AD 2.20 D): four-engine aircraft with a wingspan of 43 m or more are not allowed to land (except presidential aircraft and aircraft with special permission). Permitted aircraft must shut down their outboard engines during taxi unless necessary for flight safety.
  • Civil training flights are not allowed because of intense military training flights (AD 2.20 E).
  • Operations with Category D and E aircraft follow a separate DHMİ procedure document referenced in AD 2.20 F.
  • Restricted areas: the military area LTD-9 (SFC–FL120) lies just east/south-east of the aerodrome, and the AIP also refers to the EHTES area east of the aerodrome. When LTD-9 and the training areas are active ("full"), inbound and outbound traffic must not hold over the KNY NDB or VOR (AD 2.22). The area LTD30 (SFC–12,000 ft AMSL) is charted north-east of the MTMA.
  • Birds (BRD chart): small birds fly over the aerodrome from east to west at sunrise and from west to east at sunset all year round; between March and October flocks of migratory birds, especially storks, use the area at various levels (SFC–10,000 ft AMSL); local birds are concentrated at low height (100–150 ft AGL) south of the aerodrome.
  • After landing, vacate and taxi to the civil apron as described in Taxi Procedures. Avoid high power when entering and vacating the runways (FOD).

Low Visibility Procedure

Low visibility procedures are not applied at Konya (AD 2.20). The only precision approach is the ILS CAT I RWY 01L.

Other navaids: KNY VOR/DME 111.2 MHz (CH49X) and KNY NDB 390 kHz, co-located just north of the RWY 19L/19R thresholds; KON TACAN CH88X (military). The KNY VOR/DME and the KNY NDB are unusable between R280–R330 (280°–330°) beyond 15 NM below 11,000 ft.

STARs

All STARs start at HISAR (west), OKELI (north-east), OBRUK (east) and SEHIR (south-west). These fixes must be the last point of your flight-planned route. Two types of STAR are published for each runway direction:

  • B-RNAV STARs (STAR-3 / STAR-4, based on KNY VOR/DME or GNSS) ending at the IF of the RNAV-fed approaches (LUMOS for RWY 01, GIPIR for RWY 19). Caution notes: radar service shall be available, B-RNAV approval is required, in case of loss of RNAV capability request radar vectoring, and the reference facility KNY VOR/DME must be serviceable.
  • Conventional STARs (STAR-1 / STAR-2, VOR or NDB and DME required) ending over the KNY VOR/NDB.

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

Konya has two parallel runways: 01R/19L (east) and 01L/19R (west). The main parallel taxiway is TWY E, east of RWY 01R/19L, running the full length of the field. TWY E cannot be used as a runway for landing or take-off (AD 2.20).

  • The civil apron is connected to TWY E by TWY A (north) and TWY B (middle).
  • Links between TWY E and RWY 01R/19L: A1 (north end), B1, C1 and D1 (south end). Links between the two runways: A2, B2, C2 and D2.
  • TWYs N and S lead to the military apron, C and D to the military areas south-east of the field. TWYs A3, B3, C3, D3, F1, F2, F3 and H serve the military areas west of RWY 01L/19R (F1/F2/F3 are charted as a military road).
  • Runway holding positions are charted on the ADC: A-HP1, B-HP2, N-HP3, S-HP4 and E-HP5 to E-HP8 on TWY E.
  • Stop bars and runway guard lights are not available.
  • Runway crossings require Tower permission.
  • There is an emergency zone on the east side of RWY 01R/19L, next to TWY E (ADC).
  • Obstacles (AD 2.23): hook barrier barracks (2.4 m high) stand 75–76 m either side of both runway centrelines, 450 m from the 01L/01R thresholds and 457 m from the 19L/19R thresholds; net barrier posts (0.5 m) and barracks (2.2 m) stand close to the thresholds. A military fuel tank (obstacle LTAN 1801) inside the military arrester facility lies 105 m south of the RWY 01L threshold and 145 m west of the centreline, and 2 m fences extend about 460 m north from a point 1,670 m north of the RWY 01L threshold, 120 m west of the centreline. These cannot be removed due to military requirements.

Apron, Gates and Stands

Aircraft Parking/Docking Chart (AIP AD 2 LTAN PRKG)

The civil apron (elevation 1,020 m) has stands 1–10, all charted for aircraft up to the B737-800, in front of the new civil terminal and the civil terminal. The military apron and military terminal are immediately south-west of the civil apron.

  • Nose-in guidance is not available. Guide lines and stand numbers are marked. Push-back service is provided for all stands.
  • Parking space is limited: all flights need prior approval from the airport authority (AD 2.20 G).

De-icing

De-icing is available H24. The de-icing area is at the north end of the civil apron, next to stand 10 (ADC / PRKG).

Hot Spots

Hot Spot Location
HS1 Junction of TWY B with the civil apron and the military apron (near stand 3)
HS2 Junction of TWY A with the north end of the civil apron (near stand 10 and the de-icing area)

Planning Taxi Time

All traffic leaves the civil apron via TWY A or B onto TWY E:

  • RWY 01L/R: taxi south along TWY E to D1 (RWY 01R) or D1–D2 (RWY 01L, crossing RWY 01R).
  • RWY 19L/R: taxi north along TWY E to A1 (RWY 19L) or A1–A2 (RWY 19R, crossing RWY 19L).

ATIS

Konya Information is broadcast on 124.325 MHz (H24). It includes the runway in use, the expected approach, weather and the transition level. Always copy the ATIS before calling Ground.

Obtaining Clearance

There is no separate Delivery position. Call Konya Ground (118.625) for your ATC clearance. In your initial call, include your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter you have received.

Pushback and Engine Start

Flight crews intending to start up on the apron must get clearance from ATC (AD 2.20 C). Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready. Push-back service is provided for all stands.

  • Aircraft with four engines and a wingspan of 43 m or more (when permitted) must keep their outboard engines shut down during taxi unless necessary for flight safety.

Taxi Procedures

The AIP (AD 2.20) gives the following taxi routes:

Departures

  • RWY 01L/R: taxi via TWY E and enter the runway via TWY D1/D2.
  • RWY 19L/R: taxi via TWY E and enter the runway via TWY A2/A1.

Arrivals

  • RWY 01L/R: vacate preferably via TWY B2/B1, or via TWY A2/A1 (depending on your rate of deceleration), then taxi via TWY E to the civil apron.
  • RWY 19L/R: vacate preferably to the left via TWY C2/C1 (C1 is only 15 m wide, so only by suitable aircraft), otherwise via TWY D2/D1, then taxi via TWY E to the civil apron.

General

  • Runway crossings (e.g. to and from RWY 01L/19R) are made only with Tower permission.
  • Avoid high power when entering and vacating the runways to prevent FOD.

  • Aircraft must have Tower permission before take-off and before entering or crossing a runway.
  • Avoid high power when entering the runway (FOD).
  • Departing aircraft passing along the LTD-9 and EHTES areas eastbound need Tower permission prior to take-off; when these areas are in use, departures to the east are made according to ATC instructions.
  • IFR departures to the east must climb above 7,000 ft, and IFR departures to the west above 9,000 ft, before making any turn/manoeuvre (AD 2.20 Limitations).

SIDs

All SIDs are conventional (VOR/NDB based); there are no RNAV SIDs. All departing traffic shall fly the SIDs (AD 2.22). SIDs end at HISAR, OKELI, OBRUK and SEHIR, which must be the first point of your flight-planned route. Two sets are published per runway direction: SID-1/SID-2 (VOR or NDB and DME required) and SID-3/SID-4 (VOR or NDB required, altitude-based turns). Caution (all SID charts): there are close-in obstacles requiring a higher climb gradient than the published PDG that are not taken into account in the minimum climb gradient calculations (obstacles in AD 2.10).

Noise Abatement Procedures

Aircraft certified to ICAO Annex 16 Vol. I Chapter 3 must apply NADP-2; Chapter 2 aircraft apply NADP-1 only. All other aircraft apply NADP-1 or NADP-2. Noise abatement procedures apply until passing 3,000 ft.

Airborne

After take-off, contact Konya Approach when instructed by Tower. Comply with all speed and altitude restrictions on the SID, and remember the turn restrictions (7,000 ft east / 9,000 ft west) and the LTD-9 / EHTES rules above.

TWR: THY7PK, contact Konya Approach 122.100, goodbye.

Pilot: Konya Approach 122.100, THY7PK, goodbye.

Pilot: Konya Approach, THY7PK, HISAR 1A.

APP: THY7PK, Konya Approach, radar contact, climb FL150.

After Departure

After leaving the Konya MTMA you will be handed over to Ankara Control, depending on your route.

Thank you for flying with TRvACC — hope to see you again in Konya!

VFR Procedures

The AIP publishes no VFR routes or VFR chart for Konya. AD 2.22 only states:

  • All traffic entering the CTR must establish two-way radio communication with the relevant ATC units.
  • When the LTD-9 and EHTES areas are active ("full"), ATC instructions on the VFR pattern shall be applied.
  • Civil training flights (circuits, etc.) are not allowed (AD 2.20 E).
