Gaziantep Airport

Gaziantep Oğuzeli Airport (IATA: GZT, ICAO: LTAJ) serves Gaziantep, the largest city in south-eastern Türkiye. It is located 20 km south-east of the city and is a permanent border gate (port of entry) with H24 customs, immigration and ATS.

Gaziantep Oğuzeli Airport Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTAJ ADC)

The airport has a single runway, 10/28 (3,000 m × 48 m, concrete). The RWY 10 threshold is displaced by 130 m. Elevation is 2,305 ft and the transition altitude is 10,000 ft. Two terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2) face Apron A1, which lies south of the runway between TWYs B and D.

The airport sits close to the Türkiye–Syria border, which is depicted on all SID and STAR charts east and south of the aerodrome; several fixes (KIVZE, TUSYR, SURUC, ARTAR, EMLUX) lie towards the border. Higher terrain lies to the north-west (charted spot heights up to 4,908 ft), which is reflected in the 6,300 ft MSA in that sector. All charts carry a caution for bird flocks in the vicinity of the aerodrome: the airport lies on the crossroads of seasonal west-to-east bird migration routes (spring and autumn, most intense at sunrise and sunset, birds of 3–4 kg flying in dense flocks at 0–984 ft).

Runway in Use

The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System (PRS) for LTAJ. The runway in use is selected by ATC, taking into account the surface wind and the available procedures, and is broadcast on the ATIS.

Things to know when planning:

  • RWY 28 is the instrument runway: it has the ILS CAT II (IGNP), the RNAV STARs to the ILS/RNP (1T and 1Y), the conventional STARs and every conventional approach (VOR, NDB, ILS).
  • RWY 10 has no ILS. The only straight-in approach is the RNP RWY 10 (IAC-8), fed by the RNAV STARs 1K (STAR-5). The VOR A (IAC-3) is a circling-only procedure.
  • The MET office notes that RWY 28 RVR values are unreliable.

Arrival Procedures

Gaziantep is located inside the Gaziantep TMA; the Kahramanmaraş TMA lies to the north-west. Approach service is provided by Gaziantep Approach (119.825), or by Gaziantep Tower when required or when transferred by Gaziantep Approach.

  • The RNAV STARs (STAR-3, STAR-4, STAR-5) require RNP 1; otherwise advise ATC. On first contact with Gaziantep Approach, report if you are unable to comply with the RNAV STAR.
  • Aircraft requesting the RNP approach RWY 28 must inform Gaziantep Approach on first contact. Aircraft requesting the NDB/DME or VOR/DME approach to RWY 28 must also say so on first contact.
  • The RNAV STARs may be flown with DME/DME positioning (by RNP 1-certified aircraft) only in case of GPS signal loss, and only while the DGA, DGP and DGT DMEs are in operation.
  • ATC will clear you for the final approach procedure (ILS Z, ILS Y or RNP RWY 28) at or before ASRUP.
  • Aircraft vacating the runway via a rapid exit taxiway have priority at taxiway intersections over aircraft taxiing on other taxiways; give way to them unless instructed otherwise.
  • Departing aircraft taxiing from the apron to the runway have priority over landed aircraft taxiing to the apron via TWY A. Arriving aircraft give way at the intermediate holding positions on TWYs B, C, D, F and A unless instructed otherwise.
  • All IFR/VFR civil, charter and military traffic planning to use the aerodrome must contact the Gaziantep aerodrome authority / ATC unit. Charter flights must obtain prior permission at least 3 hours in advance from the Aerodrome Office on duty.

Low Visibility

RWY 28 has an ILS CAT II (IGNP 109.1). The ILS Y CAT II RWY 28 (IAC-6) requires special aircrew and aircraft certification (OCA 2,346 ft (130 ft), radio altimeter 167 ft, missed approach climb gradient 5.0%). To avoid interference with the ILS signal, the RWY 28 holding position is on TWY A; there is no runway holding position on TWY L. The AIP publishes no separate low visibility procedures text for LTAJ.

Runways and ILS

Runway ILS (LLZ) Frequency / DME Category GP / RDH THR elevation Notes

Other navaids: GAZ VOR/DME 116.7 MHz (CH114X) and GAZ NDB 432 kHz, both on the airport north of the runway; DMEs DGA (CH45X), DGP (CH41X) and DGT (CH43X) used for RNAV DME/DME.

STARs

Three families of RNAV STARs start at ASBOM, ARPAG, BUPUN, ELGEX, OSKOV and KOZAN; these fixes must be the last point of your flight-planned route. The designator depends on the runway and on the final approach to be flown:

Runway / approach Designator Chart Ends at Entry points

Radio Failure

AD 2.22 publishes radio failure procedures for IFR flights executing the RNP approaches:

RNP RWY 28 (FAF = ASRUP) and RNP RWY 10 (FAF = EKSIX):

  1. At or after the FAF: continue the approach, execute the RNP procedure and land.
  2. Before the FAF, at or above 8,000 ft: (RWY 10: select transponder code 7600) follow the flight plan route using the last assigned and acknowledged flight level/altitude. After passing ASBOM, ARPAG, BUPUN, ELGEX, OSKOV or KOZAN, proceed direct to GAZ VOR or NDB descending to / maintaining 8,000 ft. Leave 8,000 ft at GAZ VOR or NDB, execute an instrument approach procedure and land.
  3. Before the FAF, below 8,000 ft: follow the RNP procedure laterally, climb to or maintain 8,000 ft, then proceed direct to GAZ VOR or NDB. Leave 8,000 ft at GAZ VOR or NDB, execute an instrument approach procedure and land.

For all other cases the general procedures in Türkiye AIP ENR 1.3 apply.

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

RWY 10/28 is served by the full-length parallel TWY A south of the runway. Runway connectors from west to east:

  • G – RWY 10 threshold (west end)
  • H and J – western exits; J is also the RWY 10 intersection take-off point
  • K – eastern exit
  • L – RWY 28 threshold (east end). There is no runway holding position on TWY L; the RWY 28 holding position is on TWY A (to protect the ILS).
  • M – at the west end, north of the runway.

H and K have rapid exit taxiway indicator lights (RETIL). TWYs B, C and D connect Apron A1 with TWY A; TWY F (12 m wide, PCR 400) leads south from TWY A to the hangar area at the west end. Stop bars are installed on TWYs A, G, H, J, K and M; runway guard lights on A, G, H, J and K. Intermediate holding positions are marked on TWYs A, B, C, D and F. The ADC also shows apron holding points AHP1 (TWY D) and AHP2 (TWY A east of B).

There are 15–20 m high obstacles in the area south of and parallel to TWY A, 80 m from its centreline, starting 180 m from the RWY 10 end of TWY A and extending 800 m towards RWY 28.

Apron and Stands

Aircraft Parking/Docking Chart (AIP AD 2 LTAJ PRKG)

All stands are on Apron A1 (elevation 695 m). Push-back service is provided for each stand, and nose-in guidance, stand numbers and guide lines are available.

  • Stands 1–10 (west part, in front of Terminal 2): stand 1 is charted for a Falcon 900LX, stands 2–10 for aircraft up to the B737-800.
  • Stands 101–106, A106, B106 (east part, in front of Terminal 1): stands 101 and A106 are charted for the B777-300ER; 102–106 and B106 for the B737-800.
  • While Category E or F aircraft are being pushed back on the apron, Category E and F aircraft must not taxi on TWY A next to the apron.

APU

At bridge stands the APU must be switched off within 5 minutes after parking (use the bridge power and air). The APU may be started no earlier than 15 minutes before engine start.

De-icing

De-icing is available H24 on two areas: De-icing Area 1 (west, next to TWY A near TWY J) is used for Category D and E aircraft; De-icing Area 2 (east end, near TWY L) is used primarily for Category C aircraft.

Waiting behind aircraft at holding points

While Category D, E or F aircraft are waiting on TWYs G, H, J, K or L, no aircraft may taxi behind them. If only Category C aircraft are waiting, only Category C aircraft may taxi behind them.

Planning Taxi Time

Apron A1 lies roughly in the middle of the runway, so taxi distances to both runway ends are similar:

  • RWY 28: taxi east on TWY A to the RWY 28 holding position on TWY A.
  • RWY 10: taxi west on TWY A to TWY G (or to TWY J for an intersection departure).

ATIS

Gaziantep Information is broadcast on 119.275 MHz (H24). Always copy the ATIS before calling Ground.

Obtaining Clearance

There is no separate Delivery position in the AIP. Call Gaziantep Ground (121.900) for your ATC clearance. In your initial call, include your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter you have received.

Pushback and Engine Start

Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready. Push-back is provided at every stand. Remember the APU rule above (APU start no earlier than 15 minutes before engine start).

Taxi Procedures

Departures taxi via TWY B, C or D and TWY A to the runway in use. Departing aircraft have priority over landed aircraft taxiing to the apron on TWY A; arrivals give way at the intermediate holding positions unless instructed otherwise. For RWY 28, the holding position is on TWY A (not on L). For RWY 10, intersection departures from TWY J are possible (see table).
