Samsun Çarşamba Airport Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTFH ADC)

Samsun Çarşamba Airport (IATA: SZF, ICAO: LTFH) is the airport of Samsun, the largest city on Türkiye's central Black Sea coast. It lies 25 km east of Samsun, on the flat coastal plain of the Yeşilırmak delta, directly on the shore of the Black Sea. The airport is operated by DHMİ and is open H24 for IFR and VFR traffic (ATS, customs, fuel, handling and de-icing are all H24).

The airport has a single runway, 13/31 (3,000 m × 45 m, concrete), with no parallel taxiway: two short taxiways, B and C, link the runway with the apron, so landing aircraft normally backtrack on the runway. Elevation is 17 ft, and the transition altitude is 10,000 ft. RWY 13 has an ILS CAT II; RWY 31 has RNP, VOR/DME and NDB/DME approaches only.

Because it sits right on the coast, the RWY 13 approach is flown over the Black Sea, and the RWY 31 approach comes in over the delta. All approach charts carry the caution "BIRD HAZARD AROUND THE AIRPORT" (see Birds, Terrain and Weather). The Çarşamba CTR is a 5 NM circle from the surface to 1,000 ft AMSL.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)

The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System for LTFH. The runway in use is selected by Çarşamba Tower / Approach according to the surface wind, traffic and weather, and is broadcast on the ATIS (Çarşamba Information 129.350). Things to keep in mind:

  1. RWY 13 is the only runway with an ILS (ILS CAT II, ICRM 110.1) and a CAT II approach lighting system. In low cloud or low visibility, expect RWY 13 when the wind allows.
  2. RWY 31 has non-precision approaches only (RNP, VOR/DME, NDB/DME) with higher minima (OCA 470 ft for the VOR/DME and NDB/DME approaches; LNAV/VNAV 330 ft).
  3. There is no parallel taxiway: aircraft landing on RWY 13 vacate by backtracking to TWY B or C, and ATC applies at least 6 minutes between successive approaches (AD 2.20). Expect reduced arrival capacity and possible delaying action.
  4. Circling minima are the same for both runways: 550 ft (CAT A/B) and 900 ft (CAT C/D).

Arrival Procedures

Samsun Çarşamba is located inside the Çarşamba TMA (Merzifon MTMA lies to the south-west). Approach service is provided by Çarşamba Approach, or by Çarşamba Tower when required or when transferred by Çarşamba Approach (AD 2.17).

There are two families of STARs:

  • RNAV (GNSS) STARs (STAR-4, STAR-5, STAR-6): RNP 1 required; otherwise advise ATC. These connect directly to the ILS / RNP / VOR / NDB final approach for each runway.
  • Conventional STARs based on the CRM VOR/DME and NDB (STAR-1, STAR-2, STAR-3).

All STARs start at BAFRA, DETOS, TERME, ALMUS or HAVZA, which should be the last point of your flight-planned route.

  • ATC will clear you for the final approach at or before the FAP/FAF of the RNAV STAR (ABTEN for RWY 13, BAXOM or OVDEL for RWY 31). For RWY 13, the first option is to clear the aircraft for the ILS approach (STAR-4 caution).
  • On the RNP approaches, inform Çarşamba Approach at first contact that you request the procedure (IAC-11 / IAC-12 caution).
  • All charted speeds and altitudes are part of the procedure; the descent on the RNAV STARs is "as cleared".
  • After landing, backtrack and vacate via TWY B or C as instructed (there is no parallel taxiway).

Low Visibility Procedure

RWY 13 has an ILS CAT II (ICRM 110.1 MHz). The CAT II approaches are ILS Y CAT II (IAC-4), ILS W CAT II (IAC-6) and ILS U CAT II (IAC-8), with OCA(H) 168 ft (160 ft) and a radio-altimeter minimum of 166 ft. RWY 13 has a precision approach lighting system CAT II (900 m barrette system, of which 600 m flashing) and touchdown zone lights; RWY 31 has a CAT I system (900 m, of which 900 m flashing). Stop bars and runway guard lights are installed at TWY B and C.

Caution (AD 2.20): on RWY 13 the innermost touchdown zone markings are 9 m from the centreline on each side, but the innermost touchdown zone lights are 10 m (left barrette) and 11 m (right barrette) from the centreline. The TDZ lights and markings are not aligned — pay attention.

Radio Failure

AD 2.22 publishes radio failure procedures for IFR flights executing the RNP approaches:

  • At or after the FAF (ABTEN for RWY 13, BAXOM for RWY 31): continue the approach, execute the RNP procedure and land.
  • Before the FAF, at or above 8,000 ft: select transponder code 7600. Follow the flight plan route using the last assigned and acknowledged flight level/altitude. After passing DETOS, TERME, ALMUS, HAVZA or BAFRA, proceed direct to the CRM VOR or NDB descending to / maintaining 8,000 ft. Leave 8,000 ft at CRM VOR or NDB, execute the instrument approach procedure and land.
  • Before the FAF, below 8,000 ft: follow the RNP procedure laterally, climb to or maintain 8,000 ft, then proceed direct to CRM VOR or NDB. Leave 8,000 ft at CRM, execute the instrument approach procedure and land.

For ICAO standard SID/STAR phraseology see ENR 1.5.

Birds, Terrain and Weather

  • Birds: every LTFH approach chart carries the caution "BIRD HAZARD AROUND THE AIRPORT". The Bird Concentration and Movement Chart (AD 2 LTFH BRD) shows swamps along the coast north-west of the airport and the following movements:
    • Daily movement route: about 1–5 herons usually fly at 160–328 ft height; about 50–100 crows at 0–246 ft; about 20–30 seagulls at 0–328 ft.
    • Spring and autumn migration route: about 50–100 predatory birds usually fly at 160–492 ft height.
    • Winter migration route: about 50–200 ducks usually fly at 0–656 ft height; about 300–400 starlings at 330–984 ft height.
  • Terrain and sea: the airport (17 ft) is on the low Yeşilırmak delta right next to the Black Sea; the RWY 13 final approach and the RWY 13 base turns are flown over the sea, west of the delta. Terrain rises inland to the south and west (MSA 7,000–8,000 ft in three sectors, 5,000 ft only in the sector over the sea to the north-east). Danger area LT-D34 (SFC – 1,000 ft AMSL) is charted on the coast north-east of the airport, and LT-D17 (up to 27,000 ft AMSL) over the sea north-west of the TMA. The Aerodrome Obstacle Chart warns: "As nature, the trees continue to grow." AD obstacles are published as an electronic file (AD 2.10).
  • Wind: the AIP contains no local wind or wind shear notes for LTFH. Two anemometers are charted on the ADC (one at each runway end, not lit), and the MET office (H24) issues TREND landing forecasts and aerodrome warnings.

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

RWY 13/31 has no parallel taxiway. Two taxiways connect the runway with the apron: TWY C near the RWY 13 end and TWY B further south-east (both 24 m wide, concrete). Both have stop bars, runway guard lights and lit holding position markings. Both runway ends have turn pads (edge and centreline lights). Runway turn-off lights (RTIL) are available for RWY 13/31.

TWY C shall not be used when large aircraft such as the A340 or B777 are parked on the 45° parking positions shown on the PRKG chart.

Samsun Çarşamba Aerodrome Chart

Apron, Gates and Stands

Aircraft Parking/Docking Chart (AIP AD 2 LTFH PRKG)

There is one apron in front of the terminal with stands 1–10. Push-back service is provided for all stands (AD 2.9).

  • Stands 1–4 and 9–10: B737-800.
  • Stands 5–8: A310.
  • Two A340 / B777 positions are marked at 45° over the stands (see PRKG). When they are occupied, TWY C cannot be used.

The INS coordinates of all stands are on the PRKG chart.

De-icing

De-icing is available H24. The anti-icing area is at the north-west end of the apron, at stand 10 next to TWY C (marked on the ADC and PRKG).

Planning Taxi Time

Taxi distances are short, but departures from RWY 31 must backtrack the runway from TWY B/C to the RWY 31 end (turn pad), which takes runway occupancy time. RWY 13 departures enter the runway at the north-west end via TWY C (full length) or TWY B (intersection, see table).

ATIS

Çarşamba Information (AWOS/ATIS) is broadcast H24 on 129.350 MHz. Always copy the ATIS before calling.

Obtaining Clearance

There is no separate Delivery position in the AIP. Call Çarşamba Ground (121.700) for your ATC clearance, with your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter received.

Pushback and Engine Start

Push-back is available on all stands. Aircraft starting up and pushing back must do so without blocking TWY B (AD 2.20).
