Edremit Koca Seyit Airport
Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport (IATA: EDO, ICAO: LTFD) is a regional airport serving Edremit and the north Aegean coast of Balıkesir province. It is located 7 km south of Edremit and 87 km west of Balıkesir, on the shore of the Gulf of Edremit, and is mostly used by domestic and seasonal holiday traffic to the Edremit–Ayvalık coast.
The airport has a single concrete runway, 05/23 (3,000 m × 45 m). RWY 23 has a 300 m displaced threshold (LDA 2,700 m). There is no parallel taxiway: TWY A links Apron 1 (passenger terminals) with the middle of the runway, and TWY B links the small general-aviation Apron 2 with the runway near the RWY 23 end. Elevation is 51 ft and the transition altitude is 10,000 ft.
The only precision approach is the ILS for RWY 05; RWY 23 has an RNP approach. Circling is not authorised north of the aerodrome, where the Kaz Dağı (Mount Ida) massif rises to 5,820 ft. ATS (Edremit Tower) operates H24. Approach control service is provided by Edremit Tower inside the CTR (10 NM radius, SFC–8,000 ft AMSL) and by Ankara ACC outside the CTR. De-icing is not available.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)
The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System for LTFD. The runway in use is chosen by Edremit Tower according to the surface wind and the traffic situation and is announced on the ATIS (Balıkesir Koca Seyit Information, 127.275).
Things to keep in mind when planning for either runway:
- RWY 05 has the ILS CAT I (IKFZ 108.90) and a precision approach lighting system (900 m CAT I barrette). It is the only runway with a precision approach, so expect it in low cloud / low visibility.
- RWY 23 has only an RNP (GNSS) approach (LNAV minima) and a simple approach lighting system (540 m). The threshold is displaced by 300 m, so the landing distance available is 2,700 m.
- Both runways have PAPI (3°, left side), RTIL, and edge, threshold and end lighting; there are no runway centreline or TDZ lights (AD 2.14/2.15).
Arrival Procedures
Balıkesir Koca Seyit lies outside any TMA approach unit: you will be descended by Ankara Control and handed over to Edremit Tower (119.700), which provides the approach service inside the CTR. There is no Edremit Approach frequency (the charts show "APP –").
Arrivals use one of three STAR charts:
- RNAV (GNSS) STARs for RWY 23 (STAR-2, "K/L" designators) and RWY 05 (STAR-3, "T" designators). These require RNP 1; otherwise advise ATC. They end at the FAF of the RNP RWY 23 approach (ERPAT) or at the FAF of RWY 05 (PAFSO), so they are effectively full arrival + intermediate approach transitions. Descent on all RNAV STARs is "as cleared".
- A conventional STAR (STAR-1, "1D" arrivals) for both runways, from KONEN or DUGLA to the EDR VOR/NDB, followed by one of the conventional approaches from the EDR holding.
- All STAR / approach speed restrictions are charted maximums (e.g. max IAS 180 KT at the FAF, 210 KT at MOZAL on the RWY 05 STARs).
- Circling is not authorised north of the aerodrome (caution on every approach chart).
- For RNAV phraseology refer to AIP ENR 1.5.

RWY 23 Configuration
All RWY 23 RNAV arrivals join UNLAD (IF) at 4,750 ft and continue to ERPAT (FAF) at 3,800 ft, max IAS 180 KT, i.e. straight onto the final of the RNP RWY 23 approach. CAUTION (STAR-2): these arrivals are only to be flown by aircraft able to comply with IAC-5 (RNP RWY 23). Arrivals from the north (LEDLO, EKSIB) route via KONEN; arrivals from the south-east (DUGLA) via FD510. DUGLA 1L is reserved for aircraft re-positioning after a missed approach.
RWY 05 Configuration
RWY 05 RNAV arrivals fly a wide loop west of the airport over the Gulf of Edremit (FD720 / FD730) to MOZAL (IF) at 4,100 ft, max 210 KT, then to PAFSO (FAF/FAP) at 3,150 ft, max 180 KT on heading 048°. CAUTION (STAR-3): ATC will clear you to fly the final approach as published on IAC-4 (ILS CAT I or LOC RWY 05) at or before PAFSO. Expect the ILS RWY 05; check the ATIS for the approach in use.

Radio Failure
AD 2.22 publishes radio failure procedures for IFR flights flying the RNAV (GNSS) approaches:
- At or after the FAF (ERPAT for RWY 23, PAFSO for RWY 05): continue the approach, fly the RNP procedure and land.
- Before the FAF, at or above 8,000 ft: squawk 7600 and follow the flight plan route at the last assigned and acknowledged level. After passing EKSIB, LEDLO or DUGLA (RWY 23) or KONEN or DUGLA (RWY 05), proceed direct to the EDR VOR or NDB descending to / maintaining 8,000 ft. Leave 8,000 ft at EDR, fly an instrument approach procedure and land.
- Before the FAF, below 8,000 ft: follow the RNP procedure laterally, climb to or maintain 8,000 ft, then proceed direct to EDR VOR or NDB. Leave 8,000 ft at EDR, fly an instrument approach procedure and land.
Otherwise the procedures in Türkiye AIP ENR 1.3 apply.
Ground Operations
Ground Layout
LTFD has a single runway, 05/23, and no parallel taxiway. Two taxiways connect the aprons with the runway:
- TWY A (24 m wide) — from Apron 1 (passenger terminals) to the middle of the runway. A stop bar is installed at TWY A (the only one on the airport).
- TWY B (18 m wide, PCN 30) — from Apron 2 (light aircraft, next to the hangar) to the runway near the RWY 23 threshold.
Aircraft departing from the full length must enter the runway and backtrack; turning pad markings are available (AD 2.9). Runway threshold identification lights (RTIL) are installed on both runways. There are no runway guard lights. An engine test area is located 1,340 m from the RWY 05 threshold (393305.51N 0270031.32E); engine tests must be done with the aircraft's nose in line with the RWY 23 direction.
Apron, Gates and Stands
Flights must not be arranged without permission from the Airport Authority ("Meydan Oluru"), so that the parking areas can be planned (AD 2.20).
Apron 1
Apron 1 (284 m × 115 m, concrete, PCN 88) is in front of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and has stands 1–6:
- Stands 1–5: up to B737-800.
- Stand 6: up to A310.
Apron 2
Apron 2 (44 m × 101 m, PCN 30) next to the hangar has stands P1–P8.
- Apron 2 is only for aircraft weighing less than 5,700 kg; the PRKG chart further restricts it to the DA20-C1 type only.
- At parking positions 1 and 2 on Apron 2 aircraft cannot taxi out on their own (not enough room) and must push back, using the outward direction markings on the ground.
De-icing
De-icing is not available at LTFD (AD 2.3 / 2.4). Chemical de-icing is listed only for runway clearing (AD 2.7).
Bird Hazard
Two secondary bird migration routes pass over the Gulf of Edremit. Migration takes place mainly in autumn, winter and spring (September–January, April–May), with large flocks of quail, starlings, sparrows, storks, ducks and geese; crows, birds of prey and gulls (flocks of about 100, at 50–300 m) are present all year (AD 2.23, BRD chart).
Planning Taxi Time
Taxi distances are short: from Apron 1 via TWY A to the runway is a few hundred metres. For a full-length departure, add the time to backtrack from TWY A to the threshold (about 1.4 km to the RWY 05 threshold, 1.6 km to the RWY 23 end, derived from the declared distances).
ATIS
Balıkesir Koca Seyit Information is broadcast on 127.275 MHz (H24). Always copy the ATIS before calling Ground.
Obtaining Clearance
There is no separate Delivery position. Call Ground (121.900) for your ATC clearance, with your callsign, stand, destination and ATIS letter.
Pushback and Engine Start
Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready for push-back and start-up.
Taxi Procedures
Departures from Apron 1 taxi via TWY A to the runway. Intersection departures from TWY A are possible and avoid the backtrack:

Minimum Runway Occupancy Time for Departures
AD 2.20 for LTFD contains no runway occupancy / reaction-time rules. As a general good practice, only request line-up when fully ready, and remember that a full-length departure includes a backtrack on the runway.
SIDs
RNAV (GNSS) SIDs require RNP 1 (otherwise advise ATC). SIDs end at KONEN, DUGLA, KUZEP (RWY 23) and DUGLA, LEDLO, BIMDU, ECZIM (RWY 05), which must be the first point of your flight-planned route.

Noise Abatement Procedures
Aircraft certified to ICAO Annex 16 Vol. I Chapter 3 must apply NADP-2; Chapter 2 aircraft apply NADP-1 only. All other aircraft apply NADP-1 or NADP-2. Noise abatement procedures apply until passing 3,000 ft.
Airborne
Edremit Tower provides the approach service inside the CTR; outside the CTR the service is provided by Ankara ACC. After departure stay with Edremit Tower until instructed to contact Ankara Control. Comply with all speed and altitude restrictions on the SID, and tell ATC if you cannot fly the assigned SID.
TWR: THY7CL, contact Ankara Control (frequency), goodbye.
Pilot: Ankara Control (frequency), THY7CL, goodbye.
Pilot: Ankara Control, THY7CL, passing 4,500 ft climbing (cleared level), LEDLO 1U.
After Departure
After leaving the Edremit CTR you will be with Ankara Control. The airport lies close to the boundaries of the İstanbul TMA, Bandırma MTMA and Balıkesir MTMA (boundaries shown on the RNAV SID/STAR charts).
Thank you for flying with TRvACC — hope to see you again in Edremit!
VFR Procedures
VFR routes are published around Balıkesir Koca Seyit. They give VFR traffic an orderly flow but are not used to separate VFR and IFR traffic: all separation (from other VFR/IFR traffic, terrain/obstacles and weather) is the pilot-in-command's responsibility. If you have to leave a VFR route (e.g. for weather), inform ATC immediately and return to the route as soon as possible after notifying ATC.
VFR traffic arriving via the published routes must contact Edremit Tower as early as possible; the CTR and the training areas must not be crossed unless permission is given by radio.
