Şanlıurfa GAP Airport Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTCS ADC)

Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (IATA: GNY, ICAO: LTCS) serves the province of Şanlıurfa in south-eastern Türkiye. It is located 36 km north of Şanlıurfa and is operated by DHMİ. The airport is a border gate (AD 2.23), and the aerodrome, ATS, customs and immigration, fuel, handling and de-icing are all H24. Both IFR and VFR traffic are permitted.

The airport has a single, very long runway, 04/22 (4,000 m × 45 m, concrete). Elevation is 2,708 ft and the transition altitude is 10,000 ft. A small military apron (Apron 2) and TWY C at the north-east end of the field are used only by military aircraft.

The Türkiye–Syria border lies south of the airport, just beyond the southern edge of the GAP TMA, and is drawn on the SID charts and on the RNAV STAR. Because of the border, the GAP VOR/DME is unusable between R-180 and R-220 beyond 35 NM. Lake Atatürk Dam lies north-west of the airport, and the Diyarbakır and Malatya MTMAs (military TMAs) border the GAP TMA to the east and north.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)

The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System for LTCS (AD 2.20 contains no PRS section). The runway in use is selected by Şanlıurfa/GAP Tower/Approach according to the surface wind and traffic, and is announced on the ATIS.

Points from the AIP that affect runway selection:

  1. RWY 04 has an ILS CAT II (ISUR), the RNAV (GNSS) STAR (STAR-3) and four ILS procedures (ILS Z/Y CAT I, ILS X/W CAT II).
  2. RWY 22 has an ILS CAT I only (ISAN, ILS Z CAT I or LOC Z).
  3. Both runway directions have conventional STARs, SIDs and VOR, VOR/DME, NDB and NDB/DME approaches.
  4. Both runway directions have the full 4,000 m available for take-off and landing.

Arrival Procedures

Şanlıurfa/GAP is located inside the GAP TMA. Arrivals are flown on conventional STARs based on the GAP VOR/DME (STAR-1 for RWY 04, STAR-2 for RWY 22), which all end at the GAP VOR on the airport. One RNAV (GNSS) STAR (STAR-3, RNP 1) exists for RWY 04 and ends at GURFA, the final approach fix of the RWY 04 ILS.

  • Approach service is provided by Şanlıurfa/GAP Approach, or by Şanlıurfa/GAP Tower when required or when transferred by Approach.
  • The RNAV STAR requires RNP 1; if you are not RNP 1 approved, advise ATC.
  • Max IAS in the STAR holdings is 230 KT.
  • The GAP CTR is a circle of 5 NM radius around 37°27'00"N 038°53'00"E, SFC–4,500 ft AMSL. VFR traffic shall not cross the approach and take-off surfaces or the CTR without clearance (AD 2.22).
  • Bird hazard: birds are present in the vicinity of the aerodrome all year (pigeons, magpies, crows, starlings), with light migration towards the south-east and north-west from the beginning of April to the end of May at 400–1,000 m. The BRD chart shows summer and winter migration routes passing west of the field; bird density is highest in April and September, peak times 06:00–08:00 and 16:00–18:00, at heights of 0–2,000 m.
  • Border: the Türkiye–Syria border lies south of the GAP TMA; the GAP VOR/DME is unusable between R-180 and R-220 beyond 35 NM.

Runways and ILS

Runway ILS (LLZ) Frequency / DME Category GP / RDH THR elevation Notes
04 ISUR 111.90 MHz / CH56X CAT II 3.0° / 54 ft 2,677 ft Precision approach lighting CAT II (barrette system, 420 m, of which 120 m flashing). PAPI 3° (left), MEHT 55 ft.
22 ISAN 110.70 MHz / CH44X CAT I 3.0° / 55 ft 2,708 ft Precision approach lighting CAT II (barrette system, 900 m, of which 600 m flashing). PAPI 3° (left), MEHT 55 ft.

Other navaids: GAP VOR/DME 113.2 MHz (CH79X) and GAP NDB 391 kHz, co-located on the airport (unusable R-180–R-220 beyond 35 NM due to the Türkiye/Syria border). RTIL are available at both thresholds; runway centreline and TDZ lighting is installed.

TDZ caution (AD 2.20): the TDZ light barrettes and TDZ markings are offset from the usual position. On RWY 22 the innermost left TDZ light is 10.85 m and the innermost right TDZ light 11.65 m from the runway centreline; on RWY 04 they are 11.67 m (left) and 10.83 m (right). The innermost TDZ markings are drawn in line with these lights. Pilots should pay attention.

Radio Failure

AD 2.22 publishes radio failure procedures for IFR flights executing the RNAV (GNSS) procedure to RWY 04:

  1. At or after the FAF (GURFA): continue the approach, execute one of the IAC-9, IAC-10, IAC-11 or IAC-12 procedures and land.
  2. Before the FAF (GURFA):
    • At or above 6,600 ft: select transponder code 7600. Follow the flight plan route using the last assigned and acknowledged flight level/altitude. Proceed direct to the GAP VOR or NDB descending to/maintaining 6,600 ft. Leave 6,600 ft at GAP VOR or NDB, execute an instrument approach procedure and land.
    • Below 6,600 ft: following the RNAV (GNSS) procedure laterally, climb to or maintain 6,600 ft, then proceed direct to GAP VOR or NDB. Leave 6,600 ft at GAP VOR or NDB, execute an instrument approach procedure and land.

For all other procedures, the general procedures in Türkiye AIP ENR 1.3 apply.

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

RWY 04/22 is a single 4,000 m runway with turning pads at both ends; no parallel taxiway is charted. The civil apron (Apron 1) is on the south-east side of the runway and is connected to it by two 24 m wide taxiways, TWY A (south-west) and TWY B (north-east). Stop bars are installed at TWY A and B; runway guard lights are not available. TWY C and Apron 2 (north-east end) are used only by military aircraft.

Within the runway strip there are drainage channels 105 m from the runway centreline on both sides along the whole runway, with abrupt slope changes from 105 m to 150 m (AD 2.23). An engine test area is charted on Apron 1 near TWY A.

Apron, Gates and Stands

Aircraft Parking/Docking Chart (AIP AD 2 LTCS PRKG)

Apron 1 is in front of the terminal and has stands 1–11 (nose-in guidance at all stands):

  • Stands 1–10 are marked for aircraft up to B737-800 size.
  • Stand 11 (south-west end) is marked for the A330.
  • Apron elevation 818 m (parking area 1–7: 817 m, parking area 8–11: 818 m). Apron strength PCN 100.

De-icing

De-icing is available H24. The de-icing area is at the south-west end of Apron 1, next to stand 11 and TWY A.

Planning Taxi Time

The apron is close to the middle of the runway, so taxi distances are short, but a full-length departure requires backtracking on the runway to the turning pad:

  • RWY 04: taxi via TWY A, backtrack to the RWY 04 turning pad (or depart from the A intersection, see table).
  • RWY 22: taxi via TWY B, backtrack to the RWY 22 turning pad (or depart from the B intersection).

ATIS

Şanlıurfa Information is broadcast on 128.250 MHz (H24). Copy the ATIS before calling ATC.

Obtaining Clearance

There is no Delivery position in AD 2.18. Request your ATC clearance from Şanlıurfa/GAP Ground (121.900) with callsign, stand, destination and ATIS letter.

Pushback and Engine Start

All stands are nose-in. Call Ground with your callsign and stand when fully ready for push-back and start-up.

Taxi Procedures

Taxi via TWY A or B as instructed and follow Ground's instructions; expect to backtrack on the runway for a full-length departure. Do not use TWY C or Apron 2 (military only). Intersection departures are possible:

SIDs

All SIDs are conventional (no RNAV SIDs), based on the GAP VOR (SID-1 RWY 04, SID-2 RWY 22) or the GAP NDB (SID-4 RWY 04, SID-3 RWY 22). They end at EKTEL, MAVES, ARTAR, LUTAM and BADEM, which must be the first point of your flight-planned route. AD 2.22: departing IFR traffic must reach the minimum route flight levels before leaving the MTMA.
