Ağrı Ahmed-i Hani Airport (IATA: AJI, ICAO: LTCO) is a small regional airport serving the city of Ağrı in eastern Türkiye. It lies 8 km south of Ağrı and is operated by DHMİ. The airport is a temporary border gate only for direct international flights (AD 2.23); customs and immigration are available during international flights.
Ağrı is one of the highest airports in Türkiye: the aerodrome elevation is 5,461 ft and the transition altitude is 15,000 ft. The reference temperature is 31 °C and the mean low temperature is −14 °C, so expect reduced take-off performance on warm summer days and snow, ice and de-icing in winter. Terrain around the field rises to 8,353 ft west/south-west and 9,436–9,600 ft south-east of the airport (an 11,263 ft peak is charted to the north-west), and the 25 NM MSA is 12,500–14,000 ft.
The airport has a single runway, 16/34 (3,000 m × 45 m, concrete), with a single taxiway (A) linking it to the only apron, Apron A (5 stands), on the west side of the field. There is no parallel taxiway, so departing and arriving aircraft backtrack on the runway. The runway has a 0.7 % slope: the RWY 34 threshold (5,461 ft) is 69 ft higher than the RWY 16 threshold (5,392 ft). Airport operating hours are published by NOTAM, and ATS, MET briefing, fuel, handling and de-icing are available only during aerodrome working hours (AD 2.3).

Preferential Runway System (PRS)
The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System for LTCO (AD 2.20 and AD 2.22 are NIL). The runway in use is selected by Ağrı Tower according to the surface wind, traffic and the available procedures, and is announced on the ATIS.
Things to keep in mind when the runway is chosen:
- The only precision approach is the ILS Z CAT I RWY 16 (IAGR 108.15). RWY 16 also has the precision approach lighting (CAT I barrette system, 900 m).
- RWY 34 has only a VOR Z / NDB Z non-precision approach with a 3.5° (6.1 %) final descent and simple approach lighting (450 m).
- Each runway direction has exactly one SID (INBAT 1A for RWY 16, INBAT 1B for RWY 34) and one STAR group (1D for RWY 16, 1F for RWY 34).
Arrival Procedures
Ağrı Ahmed-i Hani lies inside the Ağrı CTR, a 15 NM radius circle (centred 393856N 0430129E) from the surface to 19,000 ft AMSL (AD 2.17). Approach service is provided by Ağrı Tower within the CTR and by Ankara ACC outside the CTR. All STARs and approaches are conventional, based on the ARI VOR/DME/NDB on the airport; there are no RNAV procedures.
- Transition altitude is 15,000 ft. All STAR, holding and initial approach altitudes (10,000–12,500 ft) are below the TA, so you will be on QNH long before the approach – listen carefully for "altitude" vs "flight level" clearances.
- Maximum holding speed on the STARs and approaches is IAS 230 KT.
- DME is required for all instrument approaches; the ILS additionally requires VOR or NDB.
- Aerodrome warnings are issued by the Ağrı MET office (hours BTN 0500–1500 and during operations). Runway condition is assessed as per the ICAO GRF; a runway friction tester is used when needed (AD 2.7).
- Birds: the BRD chart shows bird activity is most dense in April and September, with peak times BTN 05:30–08:00 and 16:00–18:00, at various levels between 100 and 2,000 m.

Radio Failure
AD 2.22 (Flight Procedures) for LTCO is NIL, so there is no local radio failure procedure. The general procedures in Türkiye AIP ENR 1.3 apply.
Ground Operations
Ground Layout
The terminal, tower and Apron A are on the west side of the runway. TWY A (25 m wide, concrete) is the only taxiway: it connects Apron A to RWY 16/34 and has the only stop bar on the airfield (no runway guard lights). An aircraft holding point (AHP) is marked on TWY A. Taxiing guidance signs are not available; guide lines are painted on the apron. Taxiways have edge lighting only.
With no parallel taxiway, departing aircraft enter the runway via TWY A and backtrack to the threshold in use, and landing aircraft backtrack to TWY A after landing. Turn pads are marked "as appropriate" (AD 2.9). An engine test area is charted at the south (RWY 34) end of the field.
Apron, Gates and Stands
Apron A (concrete, PCN 70 R/B/W/T, elevation 1,656 m) has five stands, numbered 1–5 from south to north:
| Stand | Largest aircraft (PRKG) |
|---|---|
| 1 | B737-800 |
| 2 | B737-800 |
| 3 | A310 |
| 4 | B737-800 |
| 5 | B737-800 |
- There is no visual docking guidance system. The altimeter check point is on Apron A (1,656 m); INS coordinates for each stand are on the PRKG chart.
- There is no cargo handling, hangar space or repair facility for visiting aircraft. Jet A-1 is available by tanker (90,000 l) during aerodrome working hours.
De-icing and Winter Operations
The de-icing area is at the north-east corner of Apron A, next to stand 5 (ADC/PRKG). De-icing is available during aerodrome working hours (AD 2.3, AD 2.4). Snow removal is done with mechanical equipment and chemical de-icing with standard clearance priorities (AD 1.2.2), and runway condition is assessed as per the ICAO GRF (AD 2.7).
Planning Taxi Time
All departures leave Apron A via TWY A and backtrack on the runway. Expect a longer runway occupancy time than usual and possible delays to arrivals while you backtrack.
ATIS
Ağrı Information is broadcast on 125.050 MHz (AD 2.18 hours: "As AD"). Always copy the ATIS before calling Ground.
Obtaining Clearance
There is no separate Delivery position in the AIP. Call Ağrı Ground (121.725) for your ATC clearance. In your initial call, include your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter you have received.
Pushback and Engine Start
Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready. The AIP does not state whether stands are push-back or self-manoeuvring.
Taxi Procedures
Taxi via TWY A to the runway, then backtrack to the threshold in use when cleared by Tower. Full-length declared distances are 3,000 m (TORA/TODA/ASDA/LDA) for both runways; no intersection distances are published.
Phraseology to be Used for Taxi
Pilot: Ağrı Ground, THY7AJ, stand 3, request taxi.
GND: THY7AJ, Ağrı Ground, taxi to holding point runway 16 via A.
Pilot: Taxi to holding point runway 16 via A, THY7AJ.

Minimum Runway Occupancy Time for Departures
AD 2.20 (Local Aerodrome Regulations) for LTCO is NIL: no runway occupancy or pilot reaction time rules are published. Because every departure backtracks on the runway, be ready for departure before you enter the runway.
High Elevation
With an aerodrome elevation of 5,461 ft, terrain all around and a 31 °C reference temperature, check your take-off performance and the SID minimum climb gradients below carefully – they apply up to 14,000 ft (INBAT 1B).
SIDs
There is one SID per runway, both conventional (based on ARI VOR/DME/NDB) and both ending at INBAT (ARI R-276/D15.16), from where you join the airway (W/UW94 towards UZREB). INBAT should be the first point of your flight-planned route.
| Runway | SID | Procedure (AIP description) | Minimum climb gradient |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 (SID-1) | INBAT 1A | After take-off climb on ARI R-162 (162° of ARI NDB), cross 8,100 ft until 8 DME (ARI) / 9.4 DME (IAGR), then turn right and proceed along the 8 DME arc (ARI) / 9.4 DME arc (IAGR) to intercept ARI R-276 (276° of ARI NDB) (lead radial R-252) and proceed to INBAT and join the airway. | 5.4 % (328 ft/NM) until 8 DME; then 4.6 % (280 ft/NM) to INBAT |
| 34 (SID-2) | INBAT 1B | After take-off climb on ARI R-342 (342° of ARI NDB), cross 8,000 ft until 12 DME (ARI) / 10.6 DME (IAGR), then turn right, proceed to and cross ARI VOR/NDB at or above 12,000 ft, then turn right, intercept ARI R-276 (276° of ARI NDB) and proceed to INBAT to join the airway. Max IAS 204 KT until inbound to the VOR/NDB. | 4.1 % (250 ft/NM) until crossing 14,000 ft |
Noise Abatement Procedures
Aircraft certified to ICAO Annex 16 Vol. I Chapter 3 must apply NADP-2; Chapter 2 aircraft apply NADP-1 only. All other aircraft apply NADP-1 or NADP-2. Noise abatement procedures apply until passing 3,000 ft (AD 2.21).
Airborne
Approach service inside the 15 NM CTR is provided by Ağrı Tower, so you will normally stay with Ağrı Tower after take-off until you are transferred to Ankara Control outside the CTR. Comply with the speed restriction and climb gradients on the SID, and tell ATC if you cannot fly the assigned SID.
TWR: THY7AJ, contact Ankara Control, goodbye.
Pilot: Ankara Control, THY7AJ, goodbye.
Pilot: Ankara Control, THY7AJ, INBAT 1A, passing 9,000 ft climbing 12,000 ft.
After Departure
Outside the Ağrı CTR you are under the control of Ankara ACC (AD 2.17).
Thank you for flying with TRvACC — hope to see you again in Ağrı!
