Van Ferit Melen Airport (IATA: VAN, ICAO: LTCI) serves the city of Van in eastern Türkiye and lies 8 km south-west of the city, directly on the eastern shore of Lake Van. It is operated by DHMİ and is open H24 for IFR and VFR traffic, with H24 customs, ATS, fuel (Jet A1) and de-icing. The aerodrome is a border gate (AD 2.23). Besides the civil Apron 3, there are military aprons (Apron 4 and 5) and separate aprons for Presidency (Apron 1) and police (Apron 2) aircraft.
At 5,473 ft (RWY 21 threshold; RWY 03 threshold 5,417 ft) Van is one of the highest airports in Türkiye. The AIP gives a reference temperature of 29 °C and a mean low temperature of −8 °C. The transition altitude is 15,000 ft, the control zone is only a 5 NM radius from the surface to 6,500 ft AMSL, and the approaches start at 11,200–15,000 ft or higher. The airport is surrounded by high terrain on the land side: charted spot heights reach 10,512 ft east of the airport, and the 25 NM MSA is 11,000–15,000 ft. Circling is not authorised south-east of the aerodrome (between R-039 and R-209 of VAN VOR) due to high terrain. Because of the elevation, true airspeed and ground speed on approach and take-off are noticeably higher than the indicated airspeed. Plan your descent and take-off performance accordingly.
There is one runway, 03/21 (2,750 m × 45 m, asphalt). There is no ILS glide path: the instrument approaches to the runway are a LOC only and an RNP (LNAV) approach, both to RWY 03. The VOR and NDB approaches are circling-only.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)
AD 2 LTCI does not publish a Preferential Runway System. The runway in use is selected by Van ATC. Check the ATIS (Van Ferit Melen Information 125.400) for the runway and approach in use.
Things to keep in mind when you plan:
- All straight-in instrument approaches are for RWY 03: LOC only RWY 03 (IAC-6) and RNP RWY 03 (IAC-5). RWY 03 also has the only approach lighting (simple approach lighting, 420 m) and a PAPI of 3.5° (MEHT 55 ft).
- RWY 21 has no instrument approach of its own and no approach lighting (PAPI 3.3°, MEHT 40 ft). It can only be reached from an instrument approach by circling (NDB A, VOR A, VOR B, VOR C, or circling minima on the LOC/RNP 03 approaches). Circling is not authorised between R-039 and R-209 of VAN VOR (south-east of the aerodrome) due to high terrain.
- The RNAV SIDs (DORUK 1Z, BAYIR 1Z) exist only for RWY 03. Both runways have conventional SIDs.
- Turning on the runway is forbidden to protect the asphalt. Turns must be made in the turn pads (turning bays, 65 × 45 m) at both runway ends (AD 2.20).
Arrival Procedures
Van Ferit Melen lies inside the Van TMA. All arrivals enter via one of three TMA fixes:
- ESENK (VAN R-307/D24.76) on UL615–A4 from the north-west (Erzurum),
- BEYAZ (VAN R-270/D25.38) on G81 from the west (BAYIR),
- ZELSU (VAN R-113/D24.65) on G81 from the south-east (BONAM).
These fixes must be the last point of your flight-planned route.
There are three kinds of STAR:
- Conventional STARs to VAN VOR (STAR-1, "1M"): fly from the TMA fix direct to VAN VOR/DME and hold, then fly an NDB/VOR approach.
- VOR/DME STARs to DAMAR (STAR-2, "1R/1S"): fly to DAMAR (VAN R-269/D14) at 11,200 ft for the VOR B or VOR C approach.
- RNAV (GNSS) STARs for RWY 03 (STAR-3 "1T" and STAR-4 "1A"). STAR-4 (BEYAZ 1A, ESENK 1A, ZELSU 1A) ends at the FAF INKEL for the LOC only RWY 03 approach (IAC-6), and Basic RNP 1 is required between BEYAZ/ESENK/ZELSU and INKEL. STAR-3 (ZELSU 1T, RNP 1 required) ends at MAPOD, the IAF of the RNP RWY 03 approach (IAC-5).
Approach service is provided by Van Approach (122.700), or by Van Tower when required or when Van Approach transfers it (AD 2.17).
- Aircraft requesting the LOC only approach for RWY 03 must say so on first contact with Van Approach, using the phrase "Request Loc-Only Approach RWY 03" (STAR-4 caution).
- The LOC only procedure is only flown by aircraft able to comply with the RNAV arrival on STAR-4 (IAC-6 caution). Aircraft unable to comply with the RNP approach must tell Van Approach on first contact (IAC-5).
- Missed approaches due to bad weather: to avoid disturbing the traffic flow in the Van TMA, aircraft that abort the landing and pass over the runway because of bad weather must give priority to ATC instructions over the standard missed approach procedure (AD 2.22).
- Charter flights must obtain prior permission 3 hours in advance from the aerodrome office on duty. All civil, charter and military IFR/VFR traffic planning to use the aerodrome must contact the Van Ferit Melen aerodrome authority or the ATC unit (AD 2.20).
Bird Hazard
The airport lies on a bird migration route (AD 2.23):
- Migratory birds (up to about 5 kg) fly at 0–9,842 ft, winter visitors at 0–3,280 ft and local birds at 0–6,560 ft. Migration periods are spring and autumn.
- The ADC caution box warns of bird flocks in the vicinity of the aerodrome.
- The Bird Concentration chart (BRD) shows the spring migration road and the autumn/winter migration roads over Lake Van, and Çalpanak Island as a bird concentration region. Species on the chart: seagulls (about 1.5 kg, up to 3,280 ft), ducks (1–3 kg, up to 656 ft), swans (about 5 kg, up to 3,280 ft) and crows (about 300 g, up to 656 ft).
Obstacles and Terrain
- High-voltage electrical masts stand on natural obstacles between 7 km and 12 km on the RWY 03 approach and climb path (AD 2.23).
- Buildings with obstacle lights lie 6–12 km south-west of the RWY 03 approach and climb path (AD 2.23).
- Some high vehicles on the coastal road (west of the runway, along the lake shore) may penetrate the obstacle limitation surfaces (ADC caution).
- There is a mound of 0.5–1 m on the east side of RWY 21, approximately 135 m from the runway centreline (ADC note).
- Restricted area LTR46 (SFC–10,000 ft AMSL) is charted over Lake Van west of the airport.
- AD 2.10 gives no obstacle list; the AIP says an electronic obstacle file is available via the AIP Türkiye link on dhmi.gov.tr.
Winter Operations
The airport has mechanical snow removal equipment and chemical de-icing; snow clearance priorities follow the standard Snow Plan (AD 1.2-2). Braking action is assessed with a runway friction tester. The AIP notes that the CBR can vary within the RESA due to meteorological conditions (AD 2.12). De-icing is available H24, and the de-icing area is next to Apron 3 (see De-icing).
Low Visibility Procedure
AD 2 LTCI does not publish CAT II/III or low visibility procedures; there is no ILS glide path. Under low visibility conditions a follow-me service is provided (AD 2.20):
- Aircraft landing on RWY 03: follow-me starts at the RWY 21 end and ends at TWY C or D.
- Aircraft landing on RWY 21: follow-me starts at the RWY 03 end and ends at TWY C or D.
- Departing aircraft: follow-me starts at TWY C or D and ends at the end of the departure runway (03 or 21).

Remember that after a weather-related go-around ATC instructions have priority over the published missed approach (AD 2.22).
Radio Failure
AD 2.22 publishes radio failure procedures for IFR flights on the RNP RWY 03 approach and on the BEYAZ 1A, ESENK 1A and ZELSU 1A arrivals:
- At or after the FAF (EVTER for the RNP, INKEL for the 1A arrivals): continue the approach and land (RNP procedure, or LOC only RWY 03).
- Before the FAF, at or above 15,000 ft: select 7600, follow the flight plan route at the last assigned and acknowledged level. After passing ESENK, BEYAZ or ZELSU proceed direct to VAN VOR or NDB, descending to/maintaining 15,000 ft. Leave 15,000 ft at VAN VOR or NDB, fly the instrument approach procedure and land.
- Before the FAF, below 15,000 ft: follow the RNP procedure / 1A arrival laterally and descend, climb or maintain 13,000 ft. After passing the IF (VAKIT) proceed direct to VAN VOR or NDB, leave 13,000 ft at VAN VOR or NDB, fly the instrument approach procedure and land.
Helicopters and gyrocopters with radio failure landing at Van cross to the east of the aerodrome from at least 5 NM out, approach the tower perpendicular to the runway (VFR) without infringing the arrival/departure routes and runway, hold abeam the tower without crossing the runway and flash their landing lights. They then follow the tower's ALDIS lamp signals and land on the apron of their unit without using the runway. The tower can also be reached by phone (+90 432 2270010).
Ground Operations
Ground Layout
The single runway 03/21 (2,750 m × 45 m, PCR 1210) runs along the lake shore. The terminal, Apron 3 (civil), the tower and the fire station are on the east side:
- TWY C (22.5 m) and TWY D (24 m) connect the runway with Apron 3. These are the taxiways with marked runway holding positions (AD 2.9).
- TWY A (Presidency aircraft) leads to Apron 1 and TWY B (police aircraft) to Apron 2.
- TWY E and TWY F are military and lead to Apron 4 and Apron 5 (military). The military apron is used only by military traffic unless the airport authority issues a special permit (ADC caution).
On the west (lake) side there is a parallel taxiway, TWY G, connected to the runway by TWYs A1, B1, C1, E1 and F1 (15 m, asphalt).
- Aircraft with a wingspan greater than 36 m cannot use TWYs A1, B1, C1, E1 and G.
- When an aircraft longer than 30 m is waiting at the runway holding points on A1, B1, C1 or E1, no aircraft can pass behind it on TWY G.
- Turning on the runway is forbidden; use the turn pads (65 × 45 m) at both runway ends.
- There are no stop bars or runway guard lights. RGL are installed on TWYs A, A1, B, B1, C, C1, D, E, E1, F and F1; taxiways have edge lighting only.
Apron, Gates and Stands
Apron 3
Apron 3 (concrete, PCR 1100) is the civil apron in front of the terminal, with stands 1–8. Each stand is drawn for an A321-200. Apron elevation is 1,660 m.
- Marshalling service is provided for each stand (AD 2.9).
- No engine tests or high-power engine runs on Apron 3. If an engine test on Apron 3 is necessary, get permission from the tower and do it at the intersection of TWY D and the entrance to stand 6, with the engines facing the empty terrain (AD 2.20).
- Departing aircraft can do engine tests at the beginning of RWY 03 after contacting the tower (AD 2.20).
Apron 1 (Presidency), Apron 2 (police), Apron 4 and Apron 5 (military) are not for civil traffic.
De-icing
De-icing is available H24 (AD 2.3/2.4). The de-icing area is charted on the ADC next to the south-west end of Apron 3, south of TWY C.
Hot Spots
AD 2 LTCI does not publish hot spots. The red circles on the ADC and PRKG are engine test areas (RWY 03 threshold and Apron 3/TWY D).
Planning Taxi Time
All civil traffic uses Apron 3, which is about in the middle of the runway (TWYs C and D):
- RWY 03: taxi to the RWY 03 end, either via the runway (backtrack) or via TWY G on the lake side.
- RWY 21: taxi to the RWY 21 end, again via the runway or TWY G.
- Intersection departures are possible from A1 and B1 (RWY 03) and from E1, D, C and C1 (RWY 21), see the table under Taxi Procedures.
ATIS
Van Ferit Melen Information is broadcast H24 on 125.400 MHz. Always copy the ATIS before calling Ground.
Obtaining Clearance
There is no separate Delivery frequency in the AIP. Call Van Ground (121.900) for your ATC clearance. In your initial call, include your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter you have received.
Pushback and Engine Start
Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready. Ground will either clear you or ask you to standby. Remember that engine tests and high-power engine runs on Apron 3 are prohibited (see above).
Taxi Procedures
- Leave Apron 3 via TWY C or TWY D.
- Turning on the runway is not allowed: if you backtrack on the runway, turn around only in the turn pad at the runway end.
- TWY G and its connectors (A1, B1, C1, E1, F1) are not usable by aircraft with a wingspan over 36 m.

Minimum Runway Occupancy Time for Departures
AD 2.20 for LTCI does not publish minimum runway occupancy or pilot reaction time rules.
- Do not request line-up and take-off clearance unless you are fully ready for departure.
- If you need to backtrack on the runway, plan for it: turn around only in the turn pad.
SIDs
SIDs end at the TMA exit fixes ESENK (UL615–A4), BEYAZ (G81 west), ZELSU (G81 south-east), or further out at DORUK, BAYIR and BOZLO (T367). The exit fix must be the first point of your flight-planned route. Note the high climb gradients (5.0–5.6%) required up to 13,000 ft, 15,000 ft or FL190.
RNAV SIDs (RWY 03 only)
RNP 1 is required. Aircraft unable to comply must inform Van Tower on first contact. Both SIDs fly to CI050 on course 017° at 220 KT, then turn left to CI012, left to CI689 and right to ESENK.
| Runway | SID | Route after ESENK | Minimum climb gradient |
|---|---|---|---|
| 03 | DORUK 1Z | Right turn to DORUK | 5.6% up to 13,000 ft |
| BAYIR 1Z | Left to CI014, left to TUMKU, right to BAYIR |

Noise Abatement Procedures
Aircraft certified to ICAO Annex 16 Vol. I Chapter 3 must apply NADP-2; Chapter 2 aircraft apply NADP-1 only. All other aircraft apply NADP-1 or NADP-2. Noise abatement procedures apply until passing 3,000 ft (AD 2.21).
Airborne
Unless instructed otherwise, contact Van Approach on 122.700 after take-off. Comply with all speed, altitude and climb gradient requirements on the SID, and tell ATC if you cannot fly the assigned SID. For the RNAV SIDs, aircraft unable to comply must say so to Van Tower on first contact.
TWR: THY7AC, contact Van Approach 122.700, goodbye.
Pilot: Van Approach 122.700, THY7AC, goodbye.
Pilot: Van Approach, THY7AC, ESENK 1H.
APP: THY7AC, Van Approach, radar contact, climb FL190.
After Departure
After leaving the Van TMA you will be handed over to Ankara Control, depending on your SID and route.
Thank you for flying with TRvACC — hope to see you again in Van!
