Malatya Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTAT ADC)

Malatya Airport (Erhaç) (IATA: MLX, ICAO: LTAT) serves the city of Malatya in eastern Anatolia and is located 28 km north-west of the city. It is a joint military/civil aerodrome (AIP: "Available to: Military-Civil"), with DHMİ as the civil aerodrome operator. It is a regular or alternate aerodrome for all domestic air traffic and has a permanent border gate (customs and immigration H24).

The airport has two parallel runways, 03R/21L and 03L/21R (both 3,350 m × 45 m), but RWY 03L/21R is used as a taxiway by civil aircraft. It can be used as a runway for landing and take-off only in emergencies and when RWY 03R/21L is closed for maintenance. Elevation is 2,837 ft, the transition altitude is 10,000 ft and the transition level is assigned by ATC.

The airport lies inside the Malatya MTMA (military TMA), and the Erhaç CTR (5 NM radius) is controlled by Erhaç Tower. There is high terrain west and south-west of the aerodrome (spot heights above 10,000 ft on the charts), so circling approaches are not authorised west of the aerodrome. Restricted area LT-R23 (SFC–25,000 ft MSL) lies just west of the field and danger area LT-D14 (SFC–FL250) to the east. Malatya's other airfield, LTAO, is charted south-east of LTAT.

Preferential Runway System (PRS)

The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System for LTAT. The runway in use is selected by Erhaç Tower and announced on the ATIS. Keep these AIP facts in mind:

  • RWY 21L is the only runway with an ILS (CAT I) and RNP approach. RWY 21R has an RNP approach, but RWY 03L/21R is normally used as a taxiway.
  • There is no straight-in instrument approach to RWY 03L/R. The only RWY 03 procedure is the NDB C / VOR C circling approach (IAC-7).
  • SIDs are published for both directions (RWY 21L/R and RWY 03L/R).
  • RWY 03R/21L is not suitable for E and F category aircraft (AD 2.20 D).
  • Hook and net barriers are installed on both runways (AD 2.23). The ADC caution says: "Follow ATC instructions for the serviceable hook and net barriers due to the RWY heading to be used for landing operations."

Arrival Procedures

Malatya is in the Malatya MTMA. Arrivals enter via UREBO (north-west), OKUDU (north-east), DIGIL (east), SONSU (south-east) or RASVA (south). OKUDU and DIGIL routes join at ASKER. These fixes should be the last point of your flight-planned route.

  • The AIP STAR charts cover two types of arrival: conventional STARs to the ERH VOR or ERH NDB (charts STAR-1 to STAR-4, usable for either runway direction), and RNAV (GNSS) STARs for RWY 21L/R (chart STAR-5, "1R" designators).
  • The RNAV STARs need RNP-1. If you are not RNP-1 approved, tell ATC.
  • Max holding speed on all STARs is IAS 230 KT.
  • RNP approaches (IAC-9, IAC-10): if you want one, tell Erhaç Approach on first contact.
  • After landing, vacate the runway and contact Ground 121.65 unless told otherwise.
  • Non-scheduled flights: check NOTAMs, because of heavy (military) training flights (AD 2.20 C).
  • Aircraft without two-way radio need prior permission (AD 2.20 B).

Low Visibility Procedure

The AIP has no low visibility procedures for LTAT. The only precision approach is ILS CAT I to RWY 21L. Stop bars and runway guard lights are not available (AD 2.9).

Runways and ILS

Runway ILS (LLZ) Frequency / DME Category GP / RDH THR elevation Notes
21L IMLY 109.9 MHz / CH36X (GP 333.8 MHz) CAT I 3° / 51 ft 2,757 ft (TDZ 2,772 ft) Main instrument runway. Precision approach lighting CAT I, 900 m Calvert system (600 m flashing)
03R – – – PAPI 3° 2,828 ft No straight-in instrument approach. Simple approach lighting 150 m. Not suitable for Cat E/F aircraft
21R – – – PAPI 3° 2,762 ft RNP approach (IAC-10). Simple approach lighting 390 m. Runway normally used as a taxiway
03L – – – PAPI 3° 2,837 ft Runway normally used as a taxiway

Other navaids: ERH DVOR/DME 112.0 MHz (CH57X) and ERH NDB 421 kHz (coverage 100 NM), both north-east of the field at the same site. ERH TACAN CH82X is on the airfield. ERH DVOR/DME is unusable between R125–R180 beyond 30 NM below 13,000 ft, and between R250–R280 beyond 20 NM below 19,000 ft. On STAR-2 and STAR-4, DME information is based on the ERH TACAN (CH82X).

STARs

All conventional STARs end at the ERH VOR/NDB (holding inbound 025°, max IAS 230 KT; 7,700 ft is charted on the final segments inside 10 DME). Each chart uses a different navaid/DME combination, so the designator letter depends on the chart ATC assigns:

Chart Based on UREBO OKUDU DIGIL SONSU RASVA (direct) RASVA (via SONSU)
STAR-1 ERH VOR/DME 1A 1A 1A 1A 1A 1B
STAR-2 ERH VOR (DME from ERH TACAN) 1B 1B 1B 1B 1C 1D

STAR-4 ERH NDB (DME from ERH TACAN) 1D 1D 1D 1D 1K 1L
STAR-5 (RNAV, RWY 21L/R) GNSS 1R 1R 1R 1R – 1R

Routes and charted minimum levels (conventional STARs): UREBO track 107° to ERH; OKUDU 213° to ASKER, then 283° to ERH (DIGIL 284° to ASKER); SONSU 334° to ERH; RASVA 359° to ERH (direct) or 032° to SONSU (29.15 NM) and then 334°. Inner segments are charted at FL110 (from SONSU/RASVA) and FL120 (from ASKER, OKUDU, DIGIL). Inside the ERH DME rings, 8,000–10,000 ft and then 7,700 ft are charted. See the charts for full details.

Radio Failure

The general procedures in Türkiye AIP ENR 1.3 apply. The RNP charts (IAC-9, IAC-10) say to refer to LTAT AD 2.22 for radio failure procedures, but AD 2.22 is NIL in AIRAC 2610.

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

In normal civil operations RWY 03R/21L is the only active runway. RWY 03L/21R is used as a taxiway by civil aircraft and ATC will refer to it as such. TWYs A and B connect the two runways at the 03 end, and TWYs C and D connect them at the 21 end. TWY G connects the apron with RWY 03R/21L near the RWY 21L end. Stop bars and runway guard lights are not available. Taxiways have edge lighting only, and RWY 21R has runway threshold identification lights (RTIL).

There are engine test areas at the 21 end of the aerodrome, and a Military VIP Apron next to the civil apron. The hook barrier (aircraft arrester system) and net barrier equipment is installed alongside the runways. On RWY 03R/21L, the hook barrier barracks are 85 m east/west of the centreline, 460 m from each threshold, and the net barrier posts (1.5 m high) are 56 m east/west of the centreline near both thresholds. On RWY 03L/21R, the hook barrier barracks are 61 m east/west of the centreline, 454 m from the 03L threshold.

Apron, Gates and Stands

Aircraft Parking/Docking Chart (AIP AD 2 LTAT PRKG)

The civil Apron is in front of the terminal and connected to the runway system by TWY G. It has 7 stands:

  • Stands 1–5: B737-800 / A321
  • Stand 6: B737-800
  • Stand 7: A310

The Military VIP Apron is south-west of the civil apron.

De-icing

De-icing is available during aerodrome working hours (Type 2 KILFROST ABC-3 fluid and a de-icing car). The AIP publishes no de-icing pad or procedure.

Planning Taxi Time

All civil traffic taxis via the apron, TWY G and RWY 03L/21R (used as taxiway).

  • RWY 21L: intersection take-off from TWY G is published (TORA 3,000 m).
  • RWY 03R: departures taxi the full length of the field to the 03 end (TWY A/B).

ATIS

Erhaç Information is broadcast on 129.325 MHz (UHF 339.85 MHz), H24. Always copy the ATIS before calling.

Obtaining Clearance

There is no separate Delivery position in the AIP. Call Erhaç Ground (121.65) for your ATC clearance. In your initial call, include your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter you have received.

Pushback and Engine Start

Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready. Ground will either clear you or ask you to stand by.

Taxi Procedures

RWY 03L/21R is a taxiway for civil aircraft. Follow ATC's taxi instructions carefully, because there are no stop bars and military traffic (including arrested-landing equipment and engine test areas) shares the aerodrome.
