Kayseri Erkilet Airport Aerodrome Chart (AIP AD 2 LTAU ADC)

Kayseri Erkilet Airport (IATA: ASR, ICAO: LTAU) serves the city of Kayseri in Central Anatolia and lies 5 km north of the city. It is a joint military–civil aerodrome: the AIP lists it as "Available to: Military-Civil". The civil apron and the domestic/international terminal are on the south side of the runway, while the military terminal, the control tower and the military taxiway system (including the full-length North Taxiway, TWY P) are on the north side.

The airport has a single runway, 07/25 (3,000 m × 45 m, concrete). At 3,463 ft it is one of the highest airports in Türkiye, and the transition altitude is 10,000 ft. High terrain lies south of the field: a 12,729 ft peak (Mount Erciyes) is charted south of the airport, which is why the southern MSA is 15,000 ft and circling is not authorised south of the aerodrome on every approach chart. The airport has no ILS on RWY 07; RWY 25 has the ILS CAT I (IKSR 110.3).

All AIP services (AD operator, customs and immigration, ATS, MET, fuel, handling, de-icing) are H24. The aerodrome rescue and fire fighting category is 9.

Runway in Use

The AIP does not publish a Preferential Runway System (PRS) for LTAU. The runway in use is selected by ATC, taking into account the surface wind and the available procedures, and is broadcast on the ATIS.

Things to know when planning:

  • RWY 25 is the instrument runway: it has the ILS CAT I (IKSR 110.3, three variants ILS X/Y/Z), the Calvert CAT I precision approach lighting (900 m), the RNAV (GNSS) STAR 1P/1S (STAR-3) to the IAFs AU102/AU104 and the conventional approaches VOR A/C and NDB A/C.
  • RWY 07 has no ILS. Its straight-in procedures are the RNP RWY 07 (IAC-13, fed by the RNAV STAR 1R, STAR-4) and the VOR Z / NDB Z RWY 07 (IAC-5 / IAC-6). It has a simple approach lighting system (300 m). The only RNAV SIDs (1N, SID-9) are published for RWY 07.
  • Both runway ends have PAPI 3° (MEHT 54 ft RWY 07, 52 ft RWY 25).
  • Hook (arrester) barriers are installed on the runway. Follow ATC instructions regarding the serviceable hook barriers depending on the runway heading used for landing (ADC caution).

Arrival Procedures

Kayseri lies inside the Kayseri MTMA (military TMA); the Tuzköy TMA lies to the west. The aerodrome control zone (Kayseri CTR) is a circle of 5 NM radius around 38°45'56"N 035°28'59"E, from SFC to 4,500 ft AMSL. Approach service is provided by Erkilet Approach (119.200).

  • Flight-plan routing (AD 2.22): arrivals from the west must file via airways G/UG8, L/UL614 or W/UW76 and the points MARIF–SARIZ. Airways A/UA17 or L/UL605 and the point KISLA must not be used for arrivals.
  • PPR (AD 2.20): because of limited parking space, domestic and foreign aircraft planning to use the aerodrome must obtain permission from the relevant authority 48 hours in advance, and the flight plan must be submitted at least 2 hours before departure.
  • The RNAV STARs (STAR-3, STAR-4) require RNP 1; if you cannot comply, advise ATC.
  • On the RNAV transitions to the RWY 25 approaches (IAC-10/11/12), ATC will clear you for the approach before the IAF (AU102/AU104). Once cleared, fly the complete procedure including the RNP-1 transition. Comply with all charted level and speed restrictions (within 5 KT); if unable, tell ATC which speeds you will fly.
  • On the RNAV STAR to RWY 07 (STAR-4), ATC will clear you for the final approach (RNP RWY 07, IAC-13) at or before KACKE.
  • Landing traffic must follow ATC instructions before taxiing to the civil apron (AD 2.22).

Runways and ILS

Runway ILS (LLZ) Frequency / DME Category GP / RDH THR elevation Notes

Radio Failure

The procedures in Türkiye AIP ENR 1.3-4.5 apply. In addition (AD 2.22):

  • IFR flights unable to comply with STAR-3 (RNAV): proceed to KSR VOR/NDB via STAR-1 or STAR-2; when required to comply with ENR 1.3-4.5.3.1 f, hold over KSR until commencement of descent, then fly an instrument approach procedure and land.
  • IFR flights able to comply with STAR-3 (RNAV):
    • arriving via A/UA285, W/UW76, A/UA17 and L/UL605 through KISLA, SARIZ and GEMEREK (TIRMA): proceed to AU102 (IAF) via STAR-3, hold there if required, then fly IAC-10, IAC-11 or IAC-12 and land;
    • arriving via A/UA285, A/UA17 and L/UL605 through ERCIS and SOLSA: proceed to AU108 via STAR-3, hold there if required, then fly IAC-10, IAC-11 or IAC-12 and land.
  • IFR flights on the RNAV (GNSS) procedure to RWY 07:
    • at or after the FAF (KACKE): continue the approach and land;
    • before KACKE, at or above FL150: squawk 7600, follow the flight-plan route at the last assigned and acknowledged level; after passing ERUFE proceed direct to KSR VOR or NDB descending to/maintaining FL150, leave FL150 at KSR, fly an instrument approach and land;
    • before KACKE, below FL150: follow the RNAV (GNSS) procedure laterally, climb to or maintain FL150, then proceed direct to KSR VOR or NDB, leave FL150 at KSR, fly an instrument approach and land.

Ground Operations

Ground Layout

RWY 07/25 is 3,000 m × 45 m with 3 m shoulders on each side (6 m total). The AIP warns that airlines and pilots planning operations must take the runway and shoulder width into account and operate under their own full responsibility.

  • South side (civil): the civil apron with the new Domestic/International Terminal. It is connected to the runway by TWYs M, N and H2. Runway Guard Lights are installed on TWY H2; stop bars are not available.
  • North side (military): the military terminal, the control tower, the engine test area and the military taxiway system: the full-length parallel TWY P (North Taxiway) and the link taxiways A, B, B1, D, D1, E, F, G, H, H1, I, J, K, K1 and L.
  • Hook barrier barracks (2.4 m high) stand 53 m north and south of the runway centreline, 389 m from each threshold.

Taxi rules (AD 2.22):

  1. At the beginning of RWY 25, backtrack manoeuvres for take-off and turning back after landing are carried out counter-clockwise.
  2. Because the civil apron is close to the runway, runway incursions are a serious concern. Follow ATC instructions precisely and comply with readback/hearback procedures.
  3. Aircraft taxiing from the civil apron for RWY 07/25 must first taxi only up to the holding points of TWY N, M or H2. To enter and run on the runway you must contact the Tower and wait for permission.
  4. Category D and E aircraft may only use TWYs B1, K1, N and H2 and cannot turn back on the runway. The maximum wingspan for right turns from TWY N (towards stands 1–9) is 36 m.
  5. Traffic landing on RWY 07/25 must follow ATC instructions before taxiing to the civil apron.

Apron and Stands

Aircraft Parking/Docking Chart (AIP AD 2 LTAU PRKG)

The civil apron has two stand groups. Nose-in guidance (guide lines and stand numbers) is available at all stands, so expect a pushback on departure.

  • Stands 1–9 (west part of the apron): stands 1–8 for aircraft up to B737/A321; stand 9 for B737.
  • Stands 201A–207 (in front of the terminal): 201A, 201B, 202–206 and 207A for aircraft up to B737/A321; stand 201 for B777/A330; stand 207 for B737/A321 or B777/A330.

APU (AD 2.21): at bridge stands, switch off the APU within 5 minutes after parking and use the passenger bridge power and air. The APU may be started no earlier than 15 minutes before engine start.

De-icing

De-icing is available H24 with Type I and Type II fluids, depending on outside temperature and weather. There are three de-icing areas on the civil apron: Area 1 (west end, near stand 1), Area 2 (between stands 9 and 201A) and Area 3 (east end, near TWY H2).

Planning Taxi Time

Taxi distances from the civil apron are short for RWY 07 (via M, N or H2 to the western part of the runway). For a full-length departure from RWY 25 you will need to enter the runway and backtrack (counter-clockwise turn at the RWY 25 beginning) unless otherwise instructed.

ATIS

Erkilet Information is broadcast on 127.225 MHz (H24). Always copy the ATIS before calling for clearance.

Obtaining Clearance

The AIP publishes no Delivery position for LTAU. Call Erkilet Ground (121.6) for your ATC clearance, with your callsign, stand, destination and the ATIS letter received.

Westbound departures must file via airways A/UA17 or L/UL605 and the point KISLA. Airways G/UG8, L/UL614 or W/UW76 and the points MARIF–SARIZ must not be used for departures to the west (AD 2.22).

Pushback and Engine Start

Call Ground with your callsign and stand number when you are fully ready for pushback and start-up. Remember the APU rule above (APU start no earlier than 15 minutes before engine start).

Taxi Procedures

From the civil apron, taxi to the holding point of TWY M, N or H2 and contact Erkilet Tower for runway entry. Category D and E aircraft must use N or H2 (from the civil apron). Intersection take-offs are possible as shown below.

Runway Occupancy

AD 2.20 contains no minimum runway occupancy / reaction time rules for LTAU. Because the civil apron is close to the runway, take particular care with runway entry clearances and readbacks (see Ground Layout).

SIDs

SIDs end at TIRMA, SARIZ, KISLA, ERCIS and SOLSA, which must be the first point of your flight-planned route. Remember that westbound departures must file via KISLA (A/UA17 or L/UL605), not via SARIZ–MARIF.

RNAV (GNSS) SIDs – RWY 07 only (SID-9, RNP 1 required, otherwise advise ATC): fly to AU801 on course 071°M, max 210 KT, then:

SID Route Minimum climb gradient
TIRMA 1N AU801 – left turn – TIRMA 4.5% (273 ft/NM) up to 8,500 ft
SARIZ 1N AU801 – left turn – AU802 – left turn – SARIZ 4.5% (273 ft/NM) up to 8,500 ft

Noise Abatement Procedures

Aircraft certified to ICAO Annex 16 Vol. I Chapter 3 must apply NADP-2 on departure; Chapter 2 aircraft apply NADP-1 only. All other aircraft (except Chapter 2 and 3) apply NADP-1 or NADP-2. Noise abatement procedures apply until passing 3,000 ft. APU rules: see Apron and Stands.

Airborne

After departure you will be transferred to Erkilet Approach (119.200). Comply with all speed and altitude restrictions on the SID, and tell ATC if you cannot fly the assigned SID.

TWR: THY2RK, contact Erkilet Approach 119.2, goodbye.

Pilot: Erkilet Approach 119.2, THY2RK, goodbye.

Pilot: Erkilet Approach, THY2RK, passing 5,000 ft climbing FL100, KISLA 1N.

APP: THY2RK, Erkilet Approach, radar contact.

After Departure

After leaving the Kayseri MTMA you will be handed over to Ankara Control, depending on your route.

Thank you for flying with TRvACC — hope to see you again in Kayseri!

VFR Procedures

VFR routes are published within the Kayseri MTMA (AD 2.22, chart VFR). They give VFR traffic an orderly flow but are not used to separate VFR and IFR traffic; separation from other traffic, terrain/obstacles, weather and NOTAMs remains the pilot's responsibility. If you have to leave a VFR route (e.g. for weather), inform ATC without delay and return to the route as soon as possible unless instructed otherwise.

  • When approaching Kayseri, establish radio contact from the farthest possible distance. Without radio contact with ATC, VFR traffic must not infringe the instrument approach, missed approach and departure courses.
  • VFR traffic must use the published routes towards Ankara (MUCUR route) and Malatya (PINARBAŞI route). Other directions may only be used if the route is indicated in the flight plan and coordinated with ATC. For westbound flights, take the balloon flight area into account.
  • 112 emergency helicopters normally use the same routes; in emergencies or for other directions they coordinate with ATC.
  • Upper limit of the VFR routes: AGL + 3,000 ft; corridor width 2 NM.
Route Points
MUCUR Mucur Dörtyol Intersection – Topaklı Dörtyol Intersection – Himmetdede – Yamula Dam – 5 NM NW of Erkilet
PINARBAŞI Pınarbaşı – Köprübaşı – Karadayı Dörtyol Intersection – Kamber – Mimar Sinan

Balloon flight areas (charted on all SID/STAR charts): LTB1 (Kapadokya) SFC–8,000 ft AMSL daily SR–SS; LTB4 (Ihlara) SFC–6,000 ft AMSL Monday–Friday, SFC–7,000 ft AMSL weekends and holidays; LTB5 (Soğanlı) SFC–8,000 ft AMSL Monday–Friday, SFC–9,000 ft AMSL weekends and holidays.

Military Operations

Kayseri Erkilet is a joint military–civil aerodrome. What the AIP says about military use:

  • Available to: Military-Civil (AD 2.20 item 1).
  • Operating hours: all aerodrome services, ATS and customs are H24 (AD 2.3); there are no published civil operating-hour restrictions.
  • PPR: because of limited parking space, all domestic and foreign aircraft must obtain permission from the relevant authority 48 hours in advance and file the flight plan at least 2 hours before departure (AD 2.20 item 2).
  • Fuel: Jet A1 for civil aircraft; JP-8 and AVGAS 100–130 for military aircraft (AD 2.4).
  • A wind T is provided for military flights (AD 2.15). A TACAN (KSR, CH116X) is located at the field (AD 2.19).
  • Hook barriers are installed (AD 2.23, ADC caution) — follow ATC instructions regarding the serviceable barriers.
  • The north side of the field (military terminal, TWY P "North Taxiway", engine test area) is military. The RNP RWY 25 (IAC-9) and the MRVC chart are published as military charts.
